The writing sounds a lot like Updike, hopefully with more respect for a non-intellectual protagonist, which if you're a certain kind of person could well be a big winner.

The novel’s protagonist is violent, libidinous and so inarticulate he says ‘OK’ some 500 times. So how did the author turn his story into a tragic masterpiece?

Just once, just literally one time, I wish she would put the text aside, stop reading to me like a substitute teacher reading the lesson plan to the unfamiliar class, and just TALK about the things she knows and feels and wants. Just like, talk one time like the words were yours and not another's!
And as usual she read her speech (clearly for the first time, as she made three plain errors in reading it) with, I would say, the bare minimum of energy required to slow roll through to the end without actually stopping mid sentence. Our Chief of Police as usual ran rings around her in stage chops

There's been a lot of pearl-clutching about public grocery stores!
Which is wild, because we have a LOT of experience with public grocery stores in the US. And the folks it serves (US military & military families) stand by it.

Yes a big part of the "home invasion" goofball nonsense in the media, especially in OUR media, is simply a way of avoiding naming victims of crime as Obvious Criminals Themselves. It sounds so much scarier when their bases of operations are relabelled as "just another suburban home"
A gun for home defense generally strikes me as beyond silly: home invasions, unless there are specific risk factors (usually being in the illicit pharmaceutical trade) don't happen.
I had a student who wondered about home defense. They followed my advice and got an aluminum baseball bat instead.

The process of law school is not that it is intellectual training, for as intellectual training it is maybe the worst one going in our universities and professional schools. Maybe worse than econ. The process of law school is a regular ego check a couple of times a week to make sure you keep reading
/2 People who do law apprenticeships like she did have a much lower passage rate, closer to 25%. Karsashian is super fortunate and privileged but people like her often don’t have anyone close to them who will say “this isn’t a realistic idea and you should reconsider.”

As someone who was there, and is a "community member" (and yes I gave Joey a mild amount of shit for composing that line while he was literally sitting beside me) and made the time to be there and enjoyed being around a lot of people committed to it... he's not all wrong but that take misses much.
New Column:
Today's first Hamilton Community Safety Summit was lacking something important - community members
Held during banker's hours with 10 days notice, most Hamiltonians couldn't attend
It is time for community summits, in the community, at a time the community can attend #yhmcc #HamOnt

Good concept, but it needs to happen in the community, across the community, when people can actually attend

I'll always remember Timnit Gebru fondly when ICE is mentioned; when facial recognition algorithms were newer she went on a ferocious years-long campaign to drive AI makers to improve their ability to distinguish Black and brown people; now ICE has a facial recognition app to scan everyone's face ✊🏽
