This is no accident. Our roads are designed to prioritise the flow of 2-tonne (and above) vehicles over the lives of humans. If the speed limit along here had already been 30 (it's currently 60, in an area of high pedestrian activity) then this woman and her unborn child would likely still be alive.

On Thursday I attended the reading of a bill to reduce speed limits in residential areas to 30km/h. Cue the online outrage about how this will ruin lives.
Not a single day later a pedestrian is killed in a shopping area where the speed limit is 60km/h. And commenters call it a "tragic accident"

This may be of interest to the UK cycling community. The driver who was never charged after he killed Mike Hall in Australia on 31 Mar 2017 was just jailed for sexual assault and soliciting an 11yo girl 3 years later.

Lack of consequences!

As world leaders meet at COP30 to strengthen climate ambition, the Liberal Party has announced it will abandon Net Zero.

It’s reckless and out of touch with community.

You can’t claim to accept climate science while walking away from the action it demands.

We fundamentally misunderstand these things about streets:

1. Streets are a liability, not an asset.
2. Street design is the primary factor in crash prevention and safety.
3. Streets should prioritize human movement, not automobile movement.

For taxpayers, every piece of cycling infrastructure is a gift that keeps on giving.

An asset that returns annual savings in congestion, pollution, maintenance, safety and healthcare over its lifetime.

Stop asking whether your city can afford to invest in cycling. Ask whether it can afford not to.

If you caught the train into Perth city this morning, you would have arrived on time.

A reminder: you are not stuck in traffic, you are traffic

A wider freeway would still have been blocked by the police incident

This is a rarity. 16 years for a fatal road rage incident. Judge Conlan said it best: "The message must be sent loud and clear that the use of motor vehicles as weapons will not be tolerated and significant punishments will follow."

In #NewYorkCity, Mayor-elect Mamdani “has pledged to eliminate the city’s arcane, decades-old parking requirements for new developments, which often increase the cost of construction.”

Will that actually make housing more affordable?🧵

This is a fascinating consultation happening in Queensland. For international urbanist folks, the plan was to build heavy rail between Brisbane and Maroochydore, about 150km north.

Instead, the govt is proposing a hybrid rail to Birtinya, and bus the rest.

People are...underwhelmed.
