I'm a bit unclear from the description... Who was throwing the punches, spraying mace, and arresting people?

Was it the protestors? Gosh, I hope it was the protestors
February 10, 2026 at 8:51 AM
Damn, this headline makes it sound like protestors were also equipped with capsicum spray.
Media going to great lengths to avoid blaming cops for the violence
📢 There were violent clashes between protesters and police in Sydney's CBD as punches were thrown, capsicum spray used, and 27 people arrested.

Btw, you can email your MP if you are angry about this police violence. Our politicians need to know how horrified we all are about this attack on our right to protest, on riot police assaulting innocent people!

I think this is not very clear to people, but the police blocked all the exits and protestors could not get out, even the ones who were not intending to march.
People just wanted to leave but were trapped by police, then charged at by cops, pepper sprayed and assaulted.
Crikey was on the ground at the Sydney protest against Israeli President Isaac Herzog. We captured the confusion about how and where protesters should leave the rally, beginning with a heated discussion between NSW Police and NSW Greens MPs.

Pushing and injuring a prominent MP who clearly identifies herself as such and who is filming peacefully is the sort of thing you can only do if you expect impunity

Fuck Chris Minns
It wasn’t impossible - the cops where there to incite violence. And Albanese (and everyone else) knew this would happen and he let it.

This is really getting to me, Abigail is so lovely she wouldn't hurt a fly. Just out there trying to do what's right and peacefully protect people at prayer, and gets assaulted by the cops.
Like, stood together with her right there at town hall only a couple of weeks ago to support the Kurds

Video shows a man pinned to the ground as Australian police strike him repeatedly during an arrest. The man appears already subdued as blows continue. The incident occurred at protests in Sydney against Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

I’m safe but a lot of people around me weren’t

Saw an older lady get pepper sprayed and an older gentleman get pushed down to the ground by police

I think what gets lost a bit is how normie these crowds are and the diversity of ages coming to protest.

This is literally the bench where I'd tied my bike and picked it up (under police escort) only about half an hour prior to this.
This is assault!
Clear to see these people trying to disengage peacefully and then just gang assaulted by the cops.
Fascist Minns Labor government caused this.

Just an update to say I'm safely at home, I left the Herzog protest at about 6.30pm because I had to attend work meetings. It was extremely peaceful when I left and seems like things deteriorated quite rapidly after that.
There were children in that crowd, the police are scum.

In news that will surprise no one, fast moving cyclists and slow moving tourists do not make for a happy mix. But fast moving cyclists and even faster moving cars and trucks also don't mix! So where are we meant to cycle along here? It's a main route into the city..
February 8, 2026 at 11:21 PM
OK, going to this despite the NSW government and police doing their best to try and scare protestors and city workers away.
People have a right to peacefully voice their disgust at the government about this, giving in to their intimidation means they win. We should be able to protest genocide.

A good read from Amnesty Australia about your rights if protesting - President Herzog (AKA Signer of Bombs that Blow Up Children and Assistant in a Genocide). Yes the Minns government announced draconian rules but its not unlawful to protest tomorrow

Hope she doesn't watch the news tonight.
Ashamed of my government for inviting a war criminal, but proud of Australians for standing up to this! ✊

Can't wait for Sydney YIMBY to tell me how this is all just a supply problem. Just build more houses and the housing crisis will be solved! Meanwhile, richest 1% just raking in billions from housing market tax discounts..
New figures show the Capital Gains Tax discount will blow a quarter-trillion dollar hole in the budget over the next 10 yrs. Considerably more than the $205 bn it has cost over its 25 years. The richest 1% of income earners will get a staggering 59% of the benefit.
