Proudly Canadian 🇨🇦, happily human.

I read and write at the intersection of philosophy, religion, and technology.
Thoughts are not my own - they just kinda show up here. You can have them if you'd like.

Also, I'm new - feel free to say hi!

“God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us?

I am utterly convinced this man is just a social media hype bot whose posts function as identity projection stock cards for slacktivists to repost
There is no moral justification for today’s extraordinary concentration of wealth.

It is distorting politics, rigging markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of people.

Closing our staggering wealth gap is crucial to the survival of our economy and our democracy.

Writers used to care about writing, not subs. Journalists used to care about facts, not shares. What a sad place this is, that what is called writing is no more than advertising of you, the product.

“Sell me your bodies!” cried the old capitalist; “Sell me your self!” cries the new techfeudalist.

If we are to judge this concept of "cooperative ethics" by its fruits, I don't see how we could end up idolizing the decision making processes of a culture that defined their moral order through warfare, slavery, and human sacrifice.
"The Aztecs, by contrast, thought that practical reason was best exercised in groups – and one finds evidence for this everywhere, from the merchant rites, to the choice of school for children, to the decisions of the king himself."

Life on the slippery Earth

Aztec moral philosophy has profound differences from the Greek tradition, not least its acceptance that nobody is perfect

The most alarming thing about the internet is how it kills our capacity for delight. People spend hours scrolling glass-eyed through content that brings only crumbs of amusement. Real joy is found in the real world: in reading, in starlight, in birdsong, in service to others.

Substack but the writers set a salary goal and subscription costs get lowered as more people subscribe.

The issue with substack is that it's not scalable for users. I can't afford to pay everyone I want to read. But this could limit that problem, and I think most writers just wanna make a living.

1. Democracy requires the rule of law to function.
2. The rule of law in America has been disintegrated.
3. Therefore, the rule of law will not be restored to America through the democratic process.

If you Americans think voting is going to get you anywhere - check your logic, cousins.

Looking for recommendations for reading on "institutional capture", like how the legal system and universities develop to enforce their own authority over their domain to the detriment of public access, understanding, and contribution. Books/bloggers/papers all welcome!

But...what about the checks & balances?
I really need people in this country to move away from "but that's illegal!" or "but that's not allowed!" as their default response.

Laws do not enforce themselves and life has no umpire. Stop waiting for magical referee in the sky to fix everything.

If when asked about who you are, you respond with some mixture of socio-political identities, you don't know who you are.

You've traded individuality for tribal acceptance and capitulated to the erasure of the unique aspects of your self, replacing them with ingroup signalling. And it's a shame.

If there's an issue with the way a vehicle is built such that people are likely to get hurt, the manufacturer issues a safety recall, right? So how many teenagers does your product have to coach through suicide for that to apply to software

I don't read a lot of books for pure enjoyment these days - I'm usually following a reading list for my long-term writing/learning plans. As such, a lot is stuff I know little about and/or intuitively disagree with but haven't engaged directly.

This one is neither.

Many people I talk to seem to evoke generic spirituality as some form of externalized self-confidence.

This spirituality without fixed ethics usually manifests as an irrational reverence for one's impulses and emotions. "My feelings are true", "the spirits guide me".

Be critical of your whims.

People expect a firearms incident between troops and civilians to justify the ongoing and escalating deployment of troops across America. I think a cyber attack is far more likely. Republicans need to be contained too, external threat is better.

The problem with Sim Theory metaphysics is it replaces God as an ethical Ideal with God as power fantasy. This rebuilt God concept is not the ineffable object of Divine Judgement presiding over Human Goodness; it is simply the naked desire to achieve a different divine power - over Being & Creation.
