Drinking beer, riding bikes and fixing stuff.

Post about active travel, music and a bit of tech and politics. And riding bikes. And drinking beer.

I FOI'd English councils whether they use legal land purchase powers to create traffic-free paths. Just 1% said they have successfully.

Why is something that's so common for roads almost never done for cycle routes? And what does it mean for cycling?

Ah the 1970s.

Stagflation, three day weeks, collapsing infrastructure. Civil War in Northern Ireland. In yer face racism and bigotry everywhere. Bin strikes. Strikes in general. Blackouts. Industrial decline. Wage inequality. Dog crap everywhere. And households spent 25% of their income on food.

Look: there's absolutely a political argument for high tax rates on high earners. You can agree with it or disagree with it. Fine.

There's no argument for high tax rates on £60-80k and £100-125k and lower rates on £125k+

None.

⚡📮Nice work @royal-mail.bsky.social, who have just announced the launch of a new fleet of over 100 micro electric vehicles, replacing 52 vans.

Better for the climate and for deliveries. This is exactly the kind of move we need to see for cities free of diesel vans!

Worth remembering that freezing fuel duty, which could well happen again, costs about 30x more than the cycle to work scheme per year.

Cars ruin cities, suburbia edition. Grass verges paved over for parking in Lewisham.

I’m hearing Lutfur Rahman is very close to achieving his manifesto pledge to create 1000 new car parking spaces in Tower Hamlets. Some have even come by taking space directly from the pavement. Unbelievable in this day and age.

There are not enough muppet movies.
Right. Here's my big pitch:

Muppet James Bond

James Bond in…A Heart-Felt Goodbye

Dominic Cooper as Bond
Kermit M Frog
Mrs Moneypiggy
Beaker & Dr Bunsen HoneyQ

The agents of G.O.N.Z.O. want to kidnap the world's chickens. MI5 has a mole (Rizzo the Rat). An agent is undercover as a chef in Sweden.

Should I give a positive review to a seller who quickly refunded a sale of a fake item they had listed specifically as genuine?

they've asked!

I should know better than to buy anything on @kickstarter.com but thought a company that had multiple "successful" campaigns would be fine
but Sitpack.com have been allowed to run multiple campaigns without delivering to their backers (while selling and shipping the same products in their store)

10% of Meta's gross revenue comes from ads for fraudulent goods and scams, and; the company knows it, and; they decided not to do anything about it, because; the fines for facilitating this life-destroying fraud are far less than the expected revenue from helping to destroy its users' lives

Actually, looking at this again I'm not clear how the whole headtube/bars/fork arrangement works on a Lime bike. Anyone?

I thought we were done with this victim blaming bullshit, at the very least in London from reasonably progressive boroughs, but here's Hackney telling pedestrians to dress like a construction worker to walk to the shops rather than making the environment safer.

I mean, I think every car should have a mandatory black box tracker that should absolutely be used as evidence in collisions, speeding, other crime.

If people want to do crime they could take a bus. Or a cab. Or walk or cycle.
Year one: "We can work it out as an estimate"
Year two: "Oh, look, lots of people are dodging the system!"
Year three: "We need to fit mandatory trackers to every car in the country."
Year four plus: "Why shouldn't tracker data be used in evidence? What have people got to hide?"
I don’t think think “estimated road use” is right approach - at the least drivers should have the *option* of getting a black box fitted that just tracks their EVs usage, but come on, Mel, impersonate a serious politician!

That it’s still necessary to do more research on this is absurd but those fighting against safe space haven’t died off yet.

This New Yorker documentary about the 1988 UK government ban on broadcasting the voices of Sinn Féin and I.R.A. leaders is pretty good but they show *that clip from The Day Today with no explanation and no indicator that it is satire.

Dubious 'e-bike' product listings from Argos and Very found without illegal for road use disclaimers.

+ I have again found evidence that eBay is still selling products flagged by the Office for Product Safety and Standards as a fire risk.

Major retailers listing illegal for road use & dangerous products as an ‘electric bikes’
National retail giants such as Argos and Very.co.uk are presently listing for sale so-called 'electric bikes' that would be illegal
