Spoiler alert this is why I just say “Eastern” when I’m scheduling meetings or sending reminders. Literally cannot keep it straight 🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣
I'm glad that I don't have to be irrationally angry every time I see "EST" for the next four months.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

I’m proud to say that @noaa.gov and NCEI has released a 1 year retrospective on #Helene using ESRI Story Maps.

Here is a brief thread of how this came to be and how NOAA can still do good things (even while wearing pajamas).

The propaganda is already so bad, man. FB acquaintances who never post about politics are already posting he was murdered "by the far left" and "for his Christian beliefs". We don't know even know if they have a suspect yet.

Country is so completely beyond fucked.

If you were a user or admirer of NOAA’s amazing climate.gov website - which has had all the good stuff (e.g., actual data and climate monitoring indices) removed by government - some web and data gurus/guerrillas are about to launch a recreation at climate.us.
Follow @climate.us for launch updates.

Just talked with an anthropologist doing ethnographic work in tandem with an engineer doing water sampling and how after a short time together they had both improved their ability to do things that directly benefit actual households. That’s the good stuff, not whatever this article is trying to say.
In which a Yale prof calls for jettisoning humanities to make way for science-only universities.

“scientists… are being punished for the sins of [humanities scholars] because we all live under one roof. I cannot see a compelling reason for our continued cohabitation.”

Two things:

1. Large language models like ChatGPT are statistically likely word generators; they don't have "expertise" in anything.

2. I have seen a team of PhD level experts fail to assemble a dresser from IKEA.
OpenAI releases the newest version of the AI model that powers its popular ChatGPT chatbot, with CEO Sam Altman promoting it as like having a “team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket.”
OpenAI releases GPT-5, calling it a ‘team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket’
OpenAI says its latest version of the popular AI model is better at coding, more accurate and less deceptive than previous versions.
