The Irish Times published and lauded John Collison's op-ed, but did they fact-check it?

Andrew Jackson did. Thoroughly.

If you spent time reading the original, you'd want to give time to this counterpoint as well.

The fight against Bears is not against their claws, teeth, and massive muscular strength…but the blood spilled by unfortunate hikers eaten by them.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today that the fight against climate change was not against the fuels that cause it — only the pollution they emit.
Von der Leyen says EU is not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions
The comment could undermine European countries’ push at COP30 to move away from coal, oil and gas.

Record breaking prices for artwork sales do not, sadly, represent an investment in art and artists.

Investors are reducing their taxable profits before the end of the tax year with big one-off purchases while universities cut their humanities faculties and artists earn less than minimum wage.
A self-portrait by legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo sold for $54.66 million (€47.34m ) in New York yesterday, setting a new record for the price of a painting by a woman, the auction house Sotheby's said

It's so encouraging to get a full house for this event. It's also the first time local councillors and TDs have attended one of our public events. The conversation is detailed, respectful, and engaged. We need an evidence-based strategy to #SaveLadysIslandLake

The amount of tax-payer money that these same people have handed to greyhound racing in the last few years would pay for this hospice for children with life-limiting conditions. The existence of one is contingent on private charity, the other has it's existence guaranteed by the state. Priorities.

Conversation re: media transparency & Ivan Yates worth having. But, I've just heard Oliver Callan speaking to a Limerick hurler on @rte.ie about the Adare bypass, talking up how positive it is. The show: sponsored by car insurance. The motor industry owns Irish media via ads. Let's talk about that!

Cycling south to north on Westland Row at any time, but especially around rush hour, is *so* dangerous that I’ve had to find a completely different route. When Dublin car drivers have to do things like that, I’ll let them talk shit about cyclists, but not before then

I hope politicians who have been scapegoating asylum seekers are happy with themselves.

There is a direct line between a hostile environment and murderous acts.

The attempted murderer is responsible, but politicians are responsible for the environment.
