For my first Substack post, I wrote about the noxious rhetoric and virulent political atmosphere following the Charlie Kirk assassination, and how it reminds me of my time living and reporting through a very bleak period in Turkey.

Moldovans chose Europe - despite Russian interference. Now the EU must deliver: make accession real, rigorous, and successful. We owe it to the people of Moldova.

Exactly. Wrong reporting about this all over the place: Trump "punishing India for buying Russian oil" - that is not his concern. It is about his damn Nobel.
And, btw, Trump having a childish fit with India has nothing to do with Russia-Ukraine and has actually already helped Putin by driving India closer to China and Russia. It was all because India would not lie on Trump's behalf and claim he settled their dispute with Pakistan.

The #Commission’s proposal for the new #MultiannualFinancialFramework (#MFF) shows welcome ambition: more funding for defence, external action, and support to our friends in #Ukraine. But many questions remain on the details. Here’s my initial assessment. (1/)

I can’t help but scratch my head at the anti-green, deregulation rhetoric currently circulating in Germany.

Rationalising regulations, like supply chain reporting, makes sense — but halting investments is self-defeating for the West’s key clean tech hub.

Let's review a few facts.

This is not about national security in any way we used to understand it, I fear. It is about greatness. Territory. Backyard. Spheres of influence.
The US gets more for national security, and the world gets more for international security, from America’s NATO alliance with Denmark and good relations with Greenland, where the US has had an active military base since the 1950s, than what bullying or conquest could yield.

Making America weaker.
More deranged, dangerous threats. "We need Greenland for national security & international security...we'll go as far as we have to go. We need Greenland. And the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark. Denmark has to have us have Greenland" abcnews.go.com/Internationa...

Good point. It’s an approach that’s consistent with Trump’s view that “the European Union was formed to screw the United States”, & Witkoff’s approach to Russia - Europe is the enemy you can’t trust & should extract concessions from, Putin is the much maligned guy you can rely on.
In reflecting a bit more on this what should concern Europe is how central it is to the discussion.

The main objection to strikes is they believe it helps rather than hurts Europe. Sticking it to Europe is thus a core policy priority.
