Every country has a powerful right wing that argue “if you tax the wealthy, they’ll leave”

We need to start calling their bluff.

We need to make it so the ultra wealthy either contribute enough to be a positive part of society, or be globally shunned and unable to extract further funds from us.

This is true for government employees, but note that many employees of government contractors are also affected and will not be paid for time lost during the shutdown.

Reader question: What about furloughed workers when the shutdown eventually ends?
Trump uses government shutdown to threaten firings and punishment
President Donald Trump seeks to reshape the federal workforce during the shutdown via mass firings with the support of OMB's Russell Vought, the architect of Project 2025.

As long as we're reminding people we don't want or need a king, let's also consider that we also don't need, and shouldn't want, a chief executive. We are again witnessing the dangers of vesting too much power in anyone's hands, even someone we elect. Let's advance the work begun by the founders.

Lefties, please don't say "it isn't perfect, but..." when talking about your ideas, because A) no shit, and B) you don't make a case by admitting weakness. The right doesn't admit their flaws, they just make their case. Stop reflexively tempering expectations. Just know how to respond to critiques.

Tonight is the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s midnight ride. May his memory remind us all to resist the tyranny forming in our government.

Unions are a fifth column behind enemy lines, and they are vital to reclaiming our country, but worker owned and managed cooperatives have to be the main frontal assault in the war against capitalism and corporate oligarchy. Growing the coop movement is absolutely essential.

Huh, I guess SCOTUS does have a line.

Today's fresh hell, brought to you by raw stupidity.

Isn't the market supposed to be anti-instability? How the hell is the Dow up 2700 point after Trump decided to *temporarily* lower most tariffs and keep us guessing about what he's doing for another 90 days?

These people are about to find out.

You may be fearing your 401k is no longer enough for you to retire. But with all the cuts to NIH and Medicare you also won't live as long. So the policies are integrated.

If you are an NC resident and voted in November, please check if your name or the names of any family areone of the 60K votes being challenged. If so, confirm ASAP with your Board of Elections. You only have two weeks.

The website to check linked in the reply.

NC Court of Appeals gives over 60,000 challenged voters 15 days to prove eligibility
The majority wrote that, even though they have the authority to completely throw out the contested ballots, they decided to instead mandate a cure period for most of the challenged voters.

Maybe everyone can see it now, but the world's richest people have tanked it all to restock assets and get liquid after years of illegally playing with funny money. They used "the wokeness" as a cudgel and it worked. The next Disney princess WILL be white, as we all eat beans under the highway.

my new theory is that once you have a certain amount of money and wealth you start to go crazy and detach from reality. that number is different for everyone. for me it's $20

I'm going to rant into the void for a minute, because I am tired of losing and I desperately want us to come up with a plan to, uh, stop doing that. These are my suggestions. I'm no expert; my field is tangential to politics, at best. Hopefully someone smarter than me is thinking about this stuff.

This is the way. Kat is drawing a straight line between establishing mutual aid networks and developing durable political power. Mutual aid is great, but if it isn't used to build working class political power, it can't scale, and political power without mutual aid at its core is hollow and corrupt.
I'm Kat Abughazaleh and I'm running for Congress.

How to fund media so that is not beholden to the state or business interest is one of the big unsolved problems in leftist thought. The Right doesn't have this problem; the union of business interests with the government is kind of the point.

The Governors who did not loudly object when Trump tried to blackmail a State over a political stunt designed to cater to his hateful base should be primaried and replaced by people with some spine. When Trump declared himself to be the law, everyone in that room should have Shut. Him. Down.
