Mayor Mamdani's inauguration was amazing and inspiring. It was so beautiful to see everyone at the mic embrace ALL of NYC. But two moments really stood out to me.

So when I talk about how (esp white) early career folks feel comfortable acting toward Black faculty and how power dynamics in academia are not linear, I’m talking about this kind of thing. A Black student would never dare talk to a white faculty member like this in private much less public.

What makes this even more enraging is that Asheville hotels around this time are packed (at ridiculously high rates) because of folks traveling to visit the Biltmore House and area. So the *why* is very clear. Absolutely nasty work.
A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.
When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.
This is outrageous.
