How #democracy transforms to #autocracy: lessons from the #NurembergTrials.

The transcripts from the Nuremberg Trials and the defendants' statements help us understand how the democratic Weimar Republic transformed into a totalitarian Third Reich.

Below is a thread with selected excerpts.

I am not super optimistic that the Dem gerontocracy will learn the right lessons from Mamdani’s win but here’s my analysis anyway: newrepublic.com/article/1972...
Mamdani Did All the Things the Establishment Hates. He Won Anyway.
There’s a growing appetite for something new and innovative growing among the electorate—and an opportunity for Democrats to grow that electorate, as well.

Highlights from yesterday’s #nokings rally and parade in the sanctuary city of Kingston, NY. UC Sheriff had an estimate of ~5000 people. No violence but some very spicy signage against ICE while supporting immigrants and Gaza - no evidence that these are fringe, unpopular opinions.

ESPN doesn't mention this because they are a huge part of the problem here, but this is 100% downstream of MLB's (and all the other major sports') full-throated embrace of gambling. It's a cancer that's already ruining lives and it's only going to get worse.

One amazing consequence of Andor exposing the fascist horrors of the Empire is that it adds like 1000x more hype and satisfaction to each Imperial KIA in any other shows or films.

Destroying the Death Star? Suddenly way more satisfying now, even if I’ve seen it a million times.

How about a chatbot that mercilessly shames and harasses people using their phones in theaters on behalf of the rest of the audience?
Blumhouse, the horror studio, teamed with Meta to experiment with a technology called Movie Mate. It’s a chatbot that encourages people to use their phones as they watch films in movie theaters.

The Brooklyn artisanal stuff guy to raw milk enthusiast pipeline is real as hell up in these parts. Beware the camembert.
there was a case maybe 10 years ago in my county of a celebrated Brooklyn artisanal raw milk cheese guy, who got written up in the magazines, moving upstate and getting sloppy with it

a few people died

we know about that because the government told us not to eat his cheese anymore

After Trump was elected the first time, there was also a lot of talk about making iPhones in the US. At the time, I co-edited the sci-fi outlet Terraform, and asked @timmaughan.bsky.social to imagine what such a future might really look like.

With his permission, I'm republishing the story in full:

when MLB dropped "diversity" from its career site, I reached out to every team, including those with live DEI pages.

None committed to their current efforts. Almost nobody responded!

One week before Jackie Robinson Day, my take on the leaguewide silence:

Most MLB teams have DEI programs. Why won’t any commit to them or talk about it? | Opinion
In the Trump era, when even Jackie Robinson is at risk, the sport is quiet about diversity efforts it used to tout. | Opinion
