After Firefly, this is the show I'd uncancel if I had the power. Such a sharp, funny show nobody watched.
Better Off Ted is an exceptional, viciously funny show languishing under a completely nondescript title

Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

I'm glad I didn't have the option of a laptop in class (c/o 93). The process of listening to the lecture and deciding in real time what was important and writing that by hand in my notes was key for me. I often didn't have to refer back to my notes because that process fixed the info in my mind.
No, you would have broken your hand if you'd tried to take a *transcript* without a laptop, which is what a large percentage of student with laptops wind up (usually unconsciously) doing.

You can take really good notes at a much, much slower speed.

Sandy Hook has been matched and even eclipsed in schools and churches and synagogues in the US since then. But none of them caused a gun buying panic. Sandy Hook was the last. That's when everyone from gun control politicians to Gun Guys just accepted this his what the US is now. 13 years ago.

In this case, the alleged problem -- men pretending to be women so they can dominate women's sports -- does not exist, and policies to prevent even any potential abuse of the system are already in place. This leaves the policy proponents actually want: banning trans people from public life.
See, the path to victory is telling people that their bs moral panics are real. Then don't offer any solutions (because there are no real solutions, just the eliminationist politics of the con artists who promote the moral panics). Then, if you still somehow get into office, cave. People love that!

I finally had a chance to read the Ohio case prohibiting schools from enforcing anti-bullying policies protecting trans kids. This is a shining example of the two-faced nature of ostensible “free speech” legal groups who never seem to feel the same compulsion to actually sue on behalf of trans kids.

there’s a thing here about for the last decade or so, online people have been very negative about small talk - the weather, or local news, or whatever - and small talk is the grease that keeps physical interactions going, and i am tired of ceding that to shut-ins
i say thank you to the bus driver when i get on and yell thank you when i get off every day i ride the bus, and i take two buses to and from work, being nice and friendly costs you nothing and should be your default expectation for yourself because it improves your day and everyone else’s day
Being nice to people is just fun. Asked young server at taco place how her day was going (fine but tired) and she asked me back. I said I managed to finish my to-do list and she unexpectedly gave me a high five! Treating people like people is always rewarding.

I figured with the way the offense was playing, the Cowboys could possibly get to 7 or 8 wins, but this is just a total team embarrassment. Time to embrace the tank.

working up "democrats must embrace war mindset" rn, but one of my beliefs is this: dooming is itself a reaction to the fear of responsibility. if all is lost and nothing matters then you can't be criticized for your choices. it's not "cold eyed reason." it's an easy escape. comforting
Friendly reminder that I block people who post some variant of "it won't matter because nothing matters" on sight. Not even because they're wrong, but because I find this habit of saying the most tedious and predictable thing as if that makes you an edgy truth teller incredibly grating.

This is not true. Blackstone owns 0.06% of the single family homes in America. There is no market where they own more than 1% of the homes.

Nobody has a monopoly on housing. 2/3 of American households own their homes and rental housing is a VERY diversified and competitive industry.
