Wait, what?
The White House has been caught.

The administration inserted a photo of Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross into the Epstein files and falsely implied it showed them with victims.

In reality, it’s a publicly available fundraiser photo featuring Jackson and Ross’s own children.

The FT notes that delusional claims about London from Trump, Musk and others are having a reputational impact.

The paper points out the capital's murder rate is a third of that in Berlin, a quarter of New York's, and 5% of that in Washington DC

I read somewhere that the secret key to postwar British history is that in any incident, meeting, whatever, there’s a high chance that most participants are a bit tipsy and someone round the table is absolutely steaming drunk.
Happy 79th anniversary to this diary entry from Evelyn Waugh, in which he drinks enough to make you wonder how he lived for a further 19 years:

There was a time when we were told we didn’t have a strong far right in the UK precisely because the Tories acted as a defence against it
Because our politics is in such a terrible place, I think we downplay quite how awful Kemi Badenoch has been.

In any other era the leader of the Conservatives saying 'only migrants commit sex crimes - mass deportations now' would have not just been career ending but would've sunk the whole party

And what a tedious bit of 'Brexit wasn't done properly' nonsense he has come up with. Tho' I did enjoy the delicious stupidity of: "Post-Brexit, London also could have become more of a hub for blockchain and stablecoins. But many Bitcoin traders prefer Portugal and Milan because of the tax regime."

Ps i don't usually do this even though our causes are always very worthy, but this year's Guardian Christmas appeal is for charities promoting community cohesion & tackling polarisation and I can't think of a better time for that, so should you feel able etc www.theguardian.com/society/2025...
Communities are our defence against hatred. Now, more than ever, we must invest in hope
For this year’s Guardian charity appeal we are asking readers to donate to Citizens UK, The Linking Network, Locality, Hope Unlimited Charitable Trust and Who is Your Neighbour?

There’s a long track record in the commons of women MPs working cross party on VAWG *for a reason*, which is firstly that this doesn’t have to be a partisan issue & secondly that ‘cultures that don’t respect women’ has at times felt like a fair description of parliament.

Reform tried to dismiss questions on Farage’s racism, saying they should be asked about the ‘substance’ of their policies instead.
Unsurprisingly, their policies are shit too.

If I was an enterprising broadcast journalist seeking to kebab Kemi, I would ask her next time I interviewed her to identify who precisely she means in paragraph two. I mean, we all *know* who she means, but getting her to say “the Muslims” out loud would be somewhat clarifying imho
The thing here is absolutely you could make a sensible critique of the government’s proposed policy on practicality or effectiveness grounds, but instead pivoting directly to “you know, it’s all the fault of the foreigners” is certainly a choice

A quick explanation of how this borrowing to assist Ukraine will work. "Enhanced cooperation" means EU law is being used, but some Member States opt out. The process has been applied a few times before, but never before re the EU budget. 1/
🚨 The latest conclusions say the EU will trigger Article 20 of enhanced cooperation to ensure that any mobilisation of EU resources to guarantee joint debt "will not have an impact on the financial obligations of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia," as previously reported by Euronews.
🚨 Bombshell at #EUCO at almost 2 am: António Costa has proposed to use common borrowing to meet Ukraine's most immediate financial needs while technical work on the reparations loan continues in the coming months.

Messy mix-match solution. Leaders are still discussing.

Another McSweeney profile talking about rescuing Lambeth from Militant and Ted Knight

By the time McSweeney arrived in London, Militant had gone and Lambeth Council was led by Jim Dickson - a Blairite and now Labour MP for Dartford

Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence
