I'm so grateful for recent responses to Lessons in Magic and Disaster!!!

First, bookseller Rowan Julian with @novelneighbor.bsky.social in St Louis calls Lessons "a firecracker of a book" and "one of my favorites of 2025" in an utterly wonderful shelf-talker.

The Danish party that inspired Labour’s hardline immigration policy is on course to lose Copenhagen for the first time in more than a hundred years.

Among the reasons cited: fatigue and frustration with its hardline immigration policy.

This must happen.
We're primarying John Fetterman.

Last week, Fetterman again sold out working Pennsylvanians. He was the deciding vote for a Republican budget bill that will strip healthcare from over 400,000 Pennsylvanians.

We deserve real working class leadership in the Senate, not a Trump-enabling Democrat.

The HHS report on gender affirming care released it's updated report showing they stacked its authors with anti-trans hate-group affiliated members, several of whom aren't even doctors with any sort of clinical experience. They selected their own ideologically friendly peer reviewers.

It's a joke.

It was a crazy busy in the bookshop today. I took almost four times what I'd expect to take on a normal Weds. I guess the ramp-up to Christmas has started, which is good news. Independent bookshops make around a third of their yearly income over the seasonal period, so remember to shop local!

NEW: Trump's DOJ sent a subpoena to a gender-affirming care clinic seeking information on patients, including minors, and its insurance billing practices. The clinic—which doesn't even take insurance—fought the demand in court and won.

Yup. They need to be punished for what they tried to do. Make them squeal until they beg for a nationwide non-partisan redistricting system.
I don’t care what happens with the Texas legislative maps. Democrats should still gerrymander the shit out of blue states.

Thread. “AI is patching up the holes in conspiracy theories and so making them seem more reasonable, making them easier to spread and more resilient to collapse” was not on my bingo card.

AI relieves the pressure of cognitive dissonance. That’s … not great.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

Sometimes I glance at YouTube and there's a video about Doctor Who, Star Trek, etc., that's like "breaking news! a thing happened!"

And then instead of watching a 30 minute video I go and look for text-based sites that can tell me in three sentences what the thing that happened was.

I whole-heartedly endorse the suggestion to let Jon M. Chu have a "do-over" Jem and the Holograms movie, this time with the budget and pizzazz of his Wicked movies.
In terms of these “part 2 of 2” movies, it’s a lot closer in quality to ‘Dune Part Two’ than ‘It Chapter Two’. Concurrently, that #WickedForGood might, in any way, come off as “the movie we need right now” is very much an indictment of our stupid, stupid world (right now).
Review: 'Wicked: For Good' Is Wicked Good
Jon M. Chu and friends deliver the show’s challenging blend of kid-friendly fantasy and cynical dystopian political melodrama in a finale that sticks the landing.

I'll also note that the author of this article Emily Bazelon is having a hotdog suit moment since she helped kick up the moral panic around gender affirming care with her NYT Magazine article in 2022.

Reminder that Bazelon is fresh out of undergrad, his stat knowledge is questionable, and his qualifications are an internship with Matty's blog that he might have gotten because his mom is a well known journalist.
