USA citizens can’t really complain about having to pay more for imported goods, they were told what would happen if they voted for a simpleton.

Not just because of lobbying by Amazon and publishers, but because the fundamental idea of a universal public service that's freely available to everyone on equal terms simply as a benefit to living in society enrages a substantial portion of the population
Part of the reason I think libraries are "controversial" is that they're so awesome that they literally couldn't be proposed or completed today: lobbying by Amazon, publishers etc would spend big money to kill the idea in the crib before it could be tested.
