I'd like to play you some music that my band and I have taken far too long to finish. We gigged this one over a year ago; it's about the retreat of corporate pride, and it's given me an opportunity to indulge my Talk Talk obsession a little bit.

I share a birthday with Jodie Foster, Meg Ryan, and Go-Kashiwabara, the 104th Emperor of Japan who reigned from 1500 to 1526. And I feel older than all three combined.

I really think the people who say "anyone can call themselves trans these days" imagine some kind of past where you'd go to the doctor feeling poorly, men in white coats run a battery of tests and then, eventually, the doctor says solemnly "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I have to diagnose you with trans"
"Letting trans folks Self-ID is a problem!"

How the fuck else do we determine we're trans if not through self-identifying? You have to figure out you're trans (or might be) before you can even begin the process of fighting through the system to transition. This is fucking stupid.

"why is the UK government saying it is bad if third-parties... scalp fans by selling limited inventory for huge prices but it is absolutely fine for acts and ticketing companies to keep using dynamic pricing as long as they are “transparent” about it?"

If you want to learn to make art, there are countless people out there willing to help you. The only thing is, you have to be willing to try. The AI pushers want what they perceive is the kudos for having made the art, but they don't want to try.

As a terrifyingly old woman I’ve discovered a new joy in live music: going to gigs with my eldest (tonight’s was Bob Mould; Lorde tomorrow, MBV next week and Idlewild next month). My youngest can’t yet come to a lot of these but he and I are seeing @brokenchanter.bsky.social on Saturday.

Enjoyed Ned drawing connections here. On the feedback etc., I remember when Magnetic Fields’ Distortion came out (in 2008) and Stephin Merritt saying “Psychocandy is the last significant event in popular music production. That’s the last thing I’ve heard that sounds blaringly original.”
And here's my last major piece for the year at @thequietus.com, celebrating the 40th anniversary of one hell of an album. Finding a slightly different way in to talking about this astounding debut by the #JesusAndMaryChain was part of the challenge, but it was a great one to tackle.
Four decades back a major label released a debut album that sounded like almost nothing on earth while still sounding incredibly familiar. Our man in San Francisco Ned Raggett takes stock of it all

Happy Birthday to the JAMC's Psychocandy, which turns 40 today!

All joking aside, the heartbreaking thing about this story is seeing how a white “journalist” with poor prose & worst journalist ethics gets to repeatedly crash out & land plum jobs while so many poor, trans, Black, Native journalists never get in journalism’s door. Like…
How do you land Vanity Fair west coast editor at age 32 after having affairs with two presidential candidates you were covering as a journalist. That is some prime white lady shit.
