Over half of all people entering the Cook County Jail system are caregivers to children under 18, and over 60% of caregivers provide support to children under the age of 5 Incarceration of a parent is a recognized as a significant trauma, causing anxiety, depression, PTSD, academic struggles, physical health problems, poverty, and social stigma. The median annual income for people in prison, before conviction, was 41% less than non-incarcerated peers. The disparity is even greater for Black and women prisoners. Your donation is more than a toy or a gift for a teen. It’s a tangible connection kids take home as we work to reunite families.

Science has learned that grant termination letters went out last night to principal investigators of 29 awards made by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), including nine grants that were part of a program hoping to deliver antiviral drugs to prevent future pandemics. Other terminated grants involved research to develop improved COVID-19 vaccines and to address Long Covid, the mysterious lingering aftermath of some SARS-CoV-2 infections. “The research is being treated like we already have all the answers we will need in the future and that the current vaccines work well enough and don’t need improvement, which we know is not true,” says an investigator involved with one of the NIAID grants who asked not to be named for fear of retribution. “Some of the studies being canceled were attempting to make a pancoronavirus vaccine, which would hopefully be available the next time a novel coronavirus jumps species into humans.”

Do you or a loved one have a disability? The rights to treatment at hospitals doctors offices and more are in danger. Texas versus Becerra is an active lawsuit seeking to get rid of section 504, part of a 1973 civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. Section 504 protects disabled people's right to enter and receive services and accommodations (example: ramps ASL interpreters Braille captions screen readers) anywhere that receive federal funding or grants. This includes public schools, doctors and hospitals that take Medicaid Medicare and many more basic services. 17 states are currently signed on to the lawsuit but if 504 is struck down it will have a national effect. The suits status is due to be updated 25 February 2025. The good news? There's still time to fight!
