One of my fundamental beliefs is that I should not have to talk to people who have been cruel to me. You might be surprised to learn how often -- and vociferously -- people disagree with me about that.

Interesting: this study suggests that white support for anti-democratic policies targeting immigrants increases in places with increased Black pops but not increased Latine pops. Meaning at core what is activated in anti-democratic ideology is anti-Black racism even when the targets are not Black.

What is really going on in this society that elected Donald Trump president a second time?

I wrote about three stubborn myths about Trump’s support – and why America has experienced a de-alignment rather than a rightward realignment.

My new piece for @zeit.de – and some thoughts in English:
Unterstützung von Donald Trump: Die Irrtümer über Donald Trumps Rückhalt
Rechtsruck, multiethnische Koalition, Held einfacher Leute: Trump gilt als fest verankert. Doch diese Überzeugung beruht auf drei großen Missverständnissen.

Saw a New York Times headline that seemed to suggest that African countries were somehow particularly susceptible to the so called “Gen Z” protests. I’ve written a little about why this framing is disingenuous and also infantilising in various platforms. oecd-development-matters.org/2025/04/30/f...
From Kenya's 'Gen Z protests' to the world: Youth as a global constituency - Development Matters
Around the world, young people are turning to protest as electoral politics fails to address their grievances. So what do today's young people want – and are policy makers prepared to respond?

When will people realize that immigration enforcement and mass deportations are actually a for-profit industry completely unrelated to public safety?
NEW: The private jet that flew 10 shackled migrants to an Eswatini prison last weekend is owned by Israeli-American billionaires with close ties to Trump.

It’s oligarchs all the way down.

We keep seeing protests by young people across the African continent asking for political and economic changes, and they are met with violence and death. The recent stories from Togo, Morocco and Madagascar are heartbreaking. At what point is enough enough?

This! And a lot of them don't realise that this is what they are doing. They are hiding behind pragmatism.
One silent victim of all of these changes in the multilateral space is people’s mindsets. Working with people who are stuck in a scarcity mindset and trying to save their jobs instead of trying to do their jobs is actually really hard.
