Meanwhile, Sobeys and Aquaterra are pulling hundreds of millions of litres of water from wells in Colchester County which they sell as bottled water. For that water, the companies pay the province a total of $769 annually. That's not a typo. It's $769. (Exactly, $768.85.)

Also see, Halifax. Prime waterfront land dominated by two ports and CN owned land, surrounding the Harbour and Bedford Basin. Benefits to real-live humans come second to profit.
The PPP development was a mess, made worse by CN's (Bill Gates & BlackRock) appeal blocking progress. Another example that could easily fit within @nolore.bsky.social's latest book. A public CN would certainly have electrified its urban shunting yards and definitely not blocked affordable housing.

Want to revive rural Atlantic Canada? Trains connect. Trains grow all local economies equally. Air travel centralizes, consolidates growth to single locations. Rural citizens should fight for the return of regular trains.
Why can’t we just have trains?! 😭

Total business as usual, then taking the opportunistic power move whenever he can.

Tackling the actual problems with actual solutions? Keep waiting
In his messaging, Doug-Ford-wannabe Tim Houston - champion of pipelines, oil and gas expansion and car culture - doesn’t mention the climate crisis as the overriding cause of this drought disaster, or how industrial forestry’s destruction of fire-resistant Wabanaki forests increases wildfire risks.
Nova Scotia’s forest ban is a litmus test on whether you understand the founding principles of Canada and its constitution.

The usual suspects are, of course, failing it badly.

There's some kind of irony that during an extreme drought and threat of wildfires that they ban the activities that might save us from more climate disaster. But sure get out there in your car, carry on folks

DYK that parking a motorcycle in Halifax costs the same as any other size car/SUV/truck. Are we not paying for the space we take?

This is what causes traffic. Incentivize efficient geometries

Cities have to regain their autonomy. They're the economic drivers of provinces. Yet are told what to do and how to live by suburban and rural politicians.
the thing Houston and Fillmore dont seem to grasp is that Halifax is already a cycling city, completely independent and in spite of them.

Every advanced pedestrian signal should also be an advanced bicycle signal.
7 seconds!
Heads up Halifax.
We ask too much of car drivers though.
"Giving pedestrians a 7-second head start at traffic lights is associated with a 33% reduction in total pedestrian injuries—both fatal and non-fatal—at New York City intersections."

When insane car people in Facebook comments go on about how cyclists should be licenced and insured I think of shit like this. Power = responsibility.
At some point we should come to terms with the fact that cars are weapons and protect bystanders accordingly.

At a time where we’re trying to increase regional tourism, why not a Tourist Train from Moncton to Halifax on summer weekends, leave Moncton in the early morning, stops in Sackville, Amherst, Truro, drops the tourists off on the waterfront around 11AM. Return trip in evening.
I think it's very cool that the Ocean has been running for this long.

It's great that the station has been refurbished.

Now. About the frequency and reliability issues that plague it.

This fucking guy.

Between Fillmore and Houston, what’s happening is a lazy version of the current American administration - create a problem, attempt to set the parameters of discourse by lying and insulting people, and use your own bullshit to justify tremendous overreach.

Don’t get it twisted.

For how much politicians swoon over tourism and the tourist economy, you'd think that would come up in the HFX bike lanes debate more often. You think tourists want to come to a city having to fight off cars wherever they go? Give them a city that's easy to navigate via bike or walking. See, Europe

You have to "not be afraid." 🧵

What Andy's doing here (as mayor) is setting an expectation that riding a bike is a dangerous endeavour, which is normal - and expected.

He's implying that people who think you should be able to ride a bike without worrying about being hit by a car are unreasonable.
Andy Fillmore on the Todd Veinotte Show:

- A "subset" of 0.7% of the population go to work by bike - you have to be "physically able" and "not be afraid"

- Concerned with no RTOR, and doesn't see any evidence no right on reds is making pedestrians safer

Fillmore is a coward. Saying what he feels he needs to say to impress the right people at the right time. An opportunist. A follower. Does he stand for anything? Does he believe in anything? You can't trust anything this man says.
Another receipt from the archives regarding Mayor Fillmore's past support for #ActiveTransportation at the federal level. "We need to encourage Canadians to find alternatives to travelling by car & encourage them to live in walkable, safe & healthy neighbourhoods". From 2019. #BikeHFX #HaliSky

This is fantastic. Parkland/Regency Park Sts are wide, connect from the high school, all the way through family filled residential neighbourhoods, completing at the bike lanes (only painted ATM) along Kearney Lake Rd. The wide roads of Clayton park could all use a good AT makeover. Will be well used
We’re improving Parkland and Regency Park drives with protected bike lanes to support safer, more connected cycling connections. Learn more and share feedback on June 18, 2–4 p.m. or 6–8 p.m. at Keshen Goodman Library. Details: shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/parkland-bike-lane

Mayor Fillmore seems to have a hard time with pushback and disagreement. Understandable though given his last 9 years experience as MP - not too much notable, or controversial.
It’s really interesting how Fillmore bemoaned “the internet” getting involved in yesterday’s motion, casting cycling advocates as “inflamed.”

I’m wondering how he would describe supporters of this motion calling for people on bikes to be run off the road? Advocates of good governance?

I'll say it again... we could have had Waye. But no, the morons in this city voted for a career back-bencher who had slightly more name recognition and zero vision for this city.
Bike lanes never slowed down your commute. Too many cars as result of shitty transit options slows it down.

It's a complete disrespect of everyone involved. And beyond that, a waste of money to have to effectively duplicate this work, and present to council again. Fiscally responsible Filmore was it?
Laura White points out that this is a terrible way to treat the staff that just spent years working on this.
