100 emails per day is pretty normal for a professional. I'm surprised so few.

It's been an interesting day at Halifax's budget committee meeting. Kevin Russell, ED of the Rental Housing Providers of #NovaScotia was one of the speakers. But councillors had lot of questions for him about the Stop the Hike campaign.

My story here.

Did you know? Halifax Transit will quickly become far less accessible if Halifax Council approves the reduction in snow clearing service for transit stops and sidewalks.
Did you know? All buses and ferries in the Halifax Transit fleet are fully accessible.

Val's thread (below) contains many great points in favour of maintaining dedicated transit lanes in Halifax. Write the mayor, public works minister Fred Tilley, and your MLA and ask them to help keep buses moving. 🚌

Andy Fillmore wants to take away dedicated bus lanes by opening them up to “high occupancy vehicles” (HOV).

This list is ghoulish. There are ways to raise funds, for example driving demand for transit by reallocating car lanes to bus lanes. HRM councillors should be ambitious, not ditch all that is good.
The list of things council is considering cutting in order to keep taxes “flat” is insane. (From Sam Austin’s website). Call your councillor and tell them you won’t support them if they support these cuts.

There’s no such thing as an accident when it comes to traffic or workplace injuries or death. An inquest is definitely warranted to determine how to prevent this from happening again. And an investigation to determine liability.
Not a single mention of whether the plow truck had a working backup beeper.

Not a mention of when the driver last slept

Not a mention of any excess speed in reverse

Apparently Truro Police thinks it's ok if this happens again - nothing needs to change

this part omits the important "per capita" proviso. The municipality has no actual goal to achieve Vision Zero, nor will any councillor to date formally propose that we should adopt one
3/ "As part of their 2024 Road Safety Strategy, HRM has adopted the principle of Vision Zero.....We support this important work to maintain a downward trend in the rate of fatal and serious injuries from collisions"
February 14, 2026 at 12:20 PM
Last year, five pedestrians were struck and killed in HRM within the first six months, & over 20 fatalities were reported by August (total for year tbc)
Follow-up joint advocacy with HRM requesting a detailed action plan was unsuccessful. This is the response from the Province (thread)

I hope this motion will ask staff to explore where we could be reallocating existing road space for dedicated bus lanes (arterials)
Austin says he will support it. He wants to fund alternatives to car travel to make this a more livable city.

He says these buses will have to deal with congestion though. Our buses are moving slower. He’s going to have a motion coming up at regional council. (I can’t wait)

A huge amount of work has gone into this in-depth investigation. Please forward to your councillor, quoting victim statements, and ask for impactful action - a detailed plan would be a good start.
