Spelling names correctly is the lowest bar of journalism. When I was in college, we lost a letter grade for each typo and failed the assignment if we had a typo in the headline or misspelled a name. Glad to see CBS News will have lower standards than the Appalachian State undergrad program.
welcome to the new era of CBS News, where brave truth-telling takes precedence over spelling Zohran Mamdani’s name correctly

What has a multiscore lead ever done to wrong the Steelers? What do they have against a fourth quarter that doesn't feel like a panic attack?

I read this twice to really let the horror sink in. I can already feel how this is going to haunt me in the middle of the night on a recurring basis. Ugh.
one thing that is true for everyone reading this: unless something changes dramatically the number of people who agree with you on what basic facts constitute "reality" will shrink every year for the rest of your life

I'm watching the Steelers game against my will and my poor, sweet, well-meaning partner has no idea the mistake he's made. He seems to think this is good conversion therapy to turn me into a Packers fan but it is backfiring fantastically as I become radicalized against the league as a whole.

I'm not super studied on police reform but it feels like a low bar would be to make police departments liable for property damage and personal injuries that result from shoddy police work. It would certainly increase the incentive to investigate thoroughly before acting.
But if we abolish the police, who will come to your house when you're out, shoot your security cameras and your windows out, break your front & garage door door down damaging the foundation itself, trash all your shit, then say Oops wrong house lol, leaving you with the repair bill

This is absolutely baffling to me. The way Tesla has habitually lied and covered up crash data is WAY worse than the Cruise cover up that did irreparable harm to their reputation. How does none of this seem to stick to Tesla? Their sycophantic core audience defies any logic around brands and crises.

Finally some good news out of the Steelers. The highest paid non-quarterback in history. Richly deserved for the man who's been carrying our team. And given my lack of expectations for our offense this season...he seems primed to continue carrying that weight. About time we paid talent appropriately

This piece from @slate.com is haunting. A look into one of the towns involved in ICE detainment and how the community, and the system, got this way.

The haunting part is that this is one example of many. It takes a degree of complicity that I think we'd all like to pretend isn't likely...and yet.

the fact that they’re just playing instrumental versions of radio rock, rather than military bands or marching bands or whatever makes this whole thing so fucking farcical, like, van halen’s jump *is not meant to be instrumental*, ahahahahahahaha

This is an illuminating read for those of us not as well acquainted with this bit of history.
Despite Republicans’ general objection to income taxes, GOP senators unanimously voted for the 16th Amendment in 1909.

Why?

Because the party’s staunchest anti-tax members were convinced the states would not ratify the amendment.

They were wrong.

No, President Trump, the Income Tax Wasn’t A Mistake. But It Was an Accident.
While instituting the largest tariff increase in modern history, Trump claimed that the income tax was passed for “reasons unknown to mankind” and caused the Great Depression. Here’s the real history.

I've never really cared one way or the other about The First 48, but based on this reporting there needs to be a deeper look at some other cases and it may need to be shut down.

It also bears questioning the way we've been mixing crime and entertainment and the societal impacts.
