Had the idea to search for food content on here and typed in 'cooking'. I scrolled through a lot of cartoons of fat hairy men and ambiguously gendered animals fucking before I finally saw a potato salad.

Most people aren't paying attention. Will the DNC strategy be to stuff all this bad Trump news into annoying political ads in the runup to the election? Why not buy ad time right now when it's cheaper, and just share facts in a non-partisan way, and just keep doing that?

I definitely don't know anything special about what's going on in DC but it is also confusing to me why people are so sure that shutting down the govt would hinder rather than help Elon and Trump
I am stunned at this mass hysteria fueled by total ignorance of what's going on in DC

People genuinely seem to think Schumer wants to destroy the government

Yet when you ask them for the backward induction map of their gamed-out fight plan, their jaws go slack & their eyes go wide. Blue MAGA 🤷‍♂️
These are the same Senate Democrats who lectured the base for years about the importance of preserving the filibuster so it would still be available when Democrats were in the minority

This thread makes an obvious point that I hadn't quite thought through myself this clearly.
While I understand the desire to focus on the experience of the displaced, I find a lot of these academics fail to look at *where* the gentrifiers are coming from and *why.* They’re not materializing from thin air. They themselves couldn’t afford the areas they grew up in.

I had hoped that maybe by 2040 we could move past boomer do-nothing Democratic politics, but now that gen Z are voting I'm concerned that millennials were the high water mark for political literacy and now we will just slide into climate chaos and authoritarianism.

Please note, OR Lege. You don’t need a study or a committee. You can just legalize it, state wide. If you care about high quality multi-family housing, this is essential.

Biden failed at his two primary objectives: by running for a second term he revived Trumpism, and by providing weapons and political support for the genocide in Gaza he made a mockery of the 'rules based international order' that he claimed to champion.
From monumental legislative successes to steady leadership amid our nation’s greatest challenges, Joe Biden gave us 4 years of reunification, recovery, and revitalization. Trump will try to steal the credit, but it was Biden who delivered it for us. Thank you, President Biden.

If you’re feeling lost after the last US election, confused by the results and actions on both sides, I highly recommend this video from @adamconover.net.

It perfectly captures how I’m feeling and offers a solid explanation for why things might be this way.

Most good ideas can be taken too far. There are certain cases where the purpose of the sentence is justice, not rehabilitation. People need to believe that they live in a just society. Imo the judge should have served life or at least as many years as the total time served by the kids.
reaction to the Biden pardon of the corrupt judge confirming some of my more cynical views about people who proclaim a belief in abolition, decarceration etc: that there's a giant asterisk of "but, like, not for things that *I* think are really bad"

Free transit does not reduce driving.

Good transit does.
Fare-free transit is not an environmental policy. The reason is simple: It doesn't reduce driving.

Housing regs are so sinister it's always worse than you would've thought
i read a planning master's thesis from the late 70s or early 80s that stated it was intro'd in toronto to stop apartments from spreading outside of the downtown core and off arterials. it was also related to a movement that was opposed to women's liberation and letting them live on their own iirc.
