I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about--

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

Showed my gr. 12 ELA students @hankgreen.bsky.social's Focus Friend app, & now we run our work periods with it - they love seeing little bean knit on the screen during a focus sprint, and then we celebrate with a five minute break and deciding how to decorate our bean's space. It's helping so much!

seriously: if you haven't read this, create some time to read through this weekend
Forgive the click-bait title, but I had to wade into the "Kids can't read" & "Give them books!" discourse. While I 100% agree we should advocate for teaching long-form texts, it's easy to forget that teaching literature well is HARD. #literacies #academicsky

I love working with my gr. 10 students this sem - they’re nice, fun kids and they generally engage in class - but! Now that the Sask Party cut the required # of ELA classes for grad, my students haven’t had an ELA class for 7, and let me tell you, it is SO evident in their writing.

I'd even go so far as to say intelligence is reduced to what computers can do
We've reduced intelligence to what people can do with computers, which is fueling the current hype cycle.

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

This is true. Read The Chaos Machine by Max Fisher.
The reason the growing dominance of social media in our communication is causing a global shift towards fascism, xenophobia, and conspiracism is because it’s an information space where:
-the most visible ideas are viral ones
-the most viral ideas are the most shocking
-nothing has to be true
You may as well say that the Civil War wasn't caused by slavery but by newspapers. The medium drives the politics, but it cannot do so in a vacuum. Just saying "it's social media" doesn't provide anything actionable to change the problem.

Still wild to me that so many "savvy" folks on left and right have bought into the idea that online misinformation is overblown and doesn't really matter. From lies about migrants to transgender people to crime to election denial to climate denial, it's literally driving our country's politics.
