Beyond parody that their "declaration for teaching the best that's been thought & said" reads like it written by an AI trained on cardboard, tapioca, and 1980s infomercials for great books courses on VHS.
“Students should study the best that has been thought and said, engaging in the great conversation among the competing viewpoints that comprise our intellectual heritage, so that they freely make the best views their own.”

Levine’s “Forms” & now “The Activist Humanist” are compelling and this interview was fantastic. For English educators & teacher educators trying to transcend the (false) binary between teaching form & social justice, her work offers an entirely new/innovative approach to both.

My amazing, brilliant mutuals who are not literacy scholars—pleaaaasseee do not spread the moral panic about three-cueing v. phonics. The idea that this is what we should blame for our so-called literacy crisis is the product of a literal podcast & click-bait articles, not actual scholarship.
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

This book is fantastic for anyone teaching literature, but offers a significant additional benefit for many high school teachers: it will help them (re)discover and then trace the roots of close reading back to a particular (albeit expansive) tradition and intellectual community. (1/4) 🧵
I started following @dan-sinnamon.bsky.social 14 hours ago. I immediately purchased this ebook, and I’ve ordered a physical copy.

From the first section alone, I can tell this book will be consequential in teaching grades 9-16, my mentoring of new ELA teachers, and my work as a doctoral student.

Odd detail for me to get excited about, but as someone who’s spent A LOT of time thinking, writing, & designing PD about transfer, seeing this in Close Reading for the 21st Century was a treat. Inviting inductive reasoning across multiple examples is such a powerful & easy teaching move.

In addition to all the usual reasons to be upset by these layoffs, this is an additional layer for me. I used Teen Vogue to introduce some concepts, events, & trending topics because it was one of the few mainstream outlets that treated teens like serious people & not a marketing demographic.
Teen Vogue took young people seriously. It's impossible to overstate how important, how rare, and how profoundly needed that is.
