Excited to discuss the intersections between literacy, embodiment, interpretation, and literary inquiry. Come explore with @angelastockman.bsky.social, Jennifer Fletcher, & I at 1:15 in room 501!

Teaching is a funny thing. Some days I’m like—I get paid for THIS?

Other days I’m like—I get PAID for this?

Today is the latter.

What happens when we come to understand #literacies as cognitive, social, AND embodied practices? How might teaching shift if we accounted for the fact learning is inseparable from being & becoming? Come inquire with @angelastockman.bsky.social, Jennifer Fletcher, & I on Saturday!

A6: I really went for it with my undergrad students this year! We designed a whole unit around digging into their favorite discourse communities (i.e. fandoms), studying the genres they use, and ultimately producing a text that they felt was authentic to that community. #literacies

A6: I start my English classes by introducing students to literary theory & doing literary lightning talks! It's a quick and easy way to get them thinking about the fandoms they're in & media they already consume, enjoy, & analyze #literacies

What do topic modeling, lack, Taylor Swift, oversized sunglasses, and Louis Althusser all have in common?

They’re all key ingredients in @scottstorm.bsky.social’s and I’s #NCTE25 workshop on Theory, Theorists, & Theorizing! Come join us on Saturday at @ncte.org.

Phonics instruction is good! It’s important! Research supports it and I do too! However, phonics-only fetishism has been a right wing policy hang up for decades. Like to the extent that any broader discussion of purpose or method was labeled as the historical equivalent of “woke Marxist propaganda.”

Odd detail for me to get excited about, but as someone who’s spent A LOT of time thinking, writing, & designing PD about transfer, seeing this in Close Reading for the 21st Century was a treat. Inviting inductive reasoning across multiple examples is such a powerful & easy teaching move.

So, so real. Currently teaching a unit using Egger’s “The Circle” to explore life under Surveillance Capitalism and I keep coming back to this quote. I swear it’s from Žižek, but haven’t been able to track down where he said it.

Still a work-in-progress, but excited to launch my unit discussing, researching, & writing about the debate surrounding “The Anxious Generation.” Creating a digital whiteboard is infinitely more intuitive & functional than our LMS. All of these materials are hyperlinked to curated articles & media.

Part of teaching against AI requires better writing instruction that better reflects how composing exists in authentic contexts for actual audiences. Silverman’s & Rader’s “The World is a Text” is a fantastic resource for just that. Been a hit for my cultural criticism unit! #literacies

Revisiting West’s “Democracy Matters” and am surprised I haven’t seen it come up more considering everything happening right now. Its continued relevance 20+ years later is both a testament to his prescience and an indictment of America’s stagnation/decline.

Chris Higgins “The Good Life of Teaching” should be required reading for educators and administrators so we don’t forget that. Filled with some absolute gems. ⤵️

I’ve only just started, but my word, Politically Red is a beautiful book—inside & out. Content & form. Amazing craftsmanship in every way.

Bill Green’s framing of curriculum is feeling more urgent by the day. Teach to remember. Teach to renew.

Derek R. Ford is great on this. Excerpt from his “Teaching the Actuality of Revolution.”

Appreciate an uptick in The Discourse™️ about addressing many of the wrong turns that have been made in English education. From my #literacies vantage point, the emphasis on amorphous, decontextualized, & universally transferable skills was detrimental. Turns out purpose and context matter!

I get a lot of good close reading & discussion from this remixed empathy map (s/o to Gamestorming)!

Ss read a ch. from Tyson’s “Using Critical Theory” then used its concepts & text evidence from Egger’s “The Circle” to explore how the company begins to manipulate Mae’s drives, desires, & anxieties.

A5: Though I don’t think we should accept censorship, I do think one approach might be getting creative with how we frame what we teach. I just introduced literary & critical theory with The Lorax and it was one of the more radical units I’ve taught. 😬 #literacies

I’m not so naive as to assume a slide & some framing is enough to keep AI hacking at bay, but this always resonates with my students. I can’t help but feel learners would be be less inclined to use bots if English classes felt more like Burkean parlors & less like AP/state test prep boot camps.

It’s been a while since I’ve felt this excited about discovering a new research rabbit hole. Postdigital theory & research seems to be exploring/synthesizing many of my disparate interests & creating the exact kind of wide ranging, interdisciplinary dialogue I’ve been seeking.

If I’m understanding what you mean by adaptation correctly, you’ll want to check out scholarship on re-storying. This piece by Amy Stornaiuolo & @ebonyteach.bsky.social is a great jumping off point. This figure in particular.
