I started perceiving John Carmack as a bad guy when he got on his libertarian space travel kick, seems like that was the right call.
literally nobody else in the entire retro computing community I've seen so far has done this, and this is a VERY conservative group. fuck John Carmack.
I just learned that John Carmack misgendered and deadnamed Rebecca Heineman in his "tribute" over on Twitter. He probably thinks it's okay when talking pre-transition days, but FYI, most trans people hate that. Worse, he never calls her "she," switching to "they" for recent memories. Fuck that guy.

L'Intrus (Claire Denis)

Great movie. Mad it hasn't seen much in the way of a US release.

This is fucking insane. Football people are nuts.
Lay's Golden Grounds (2022-2022): Standard Lay's potato chips, but with a football-themed gimmick! Soil was gathered from the fields of 29 NFL stadiums and shipped to Texas, where it was mixed with dirt on potato farms. The chips were then made from these potatoes. Check this 🧵!

Criminal practitioners don’t astonish easily.

This is astonishing.
The facts are complicated, but here’s a summary of what appears to have happened based on the filings and today’s hearing:
NEWS: During a hearing in federal court in VA, prosecutors confirmed that the operative indictment in the case against James Comey was never shown to or voted on by the entire grand jury before it was presented in open court.

Defense counsel argued that’s a complete bar to further prosecution

Clippy can prevent the use of specific methods when they're added to a project's clippy.toml configuration file:

disallowed-methods = [
"std::result::Result::unwrap"

If you're a Rust user and you're scared that you might cause a similar issue, I have good news! You have the tool that you need to prevent it: Clippy!

Hell yea we've entered the era of "rogue unwrap() brings down prod", Rust has arrived.
Cloudflare generated many millions of HTTP 5XX responses today. They were triggered because code in a core proxy called .unwrap() on a Result for an operation that was expected to never fail.

They will package "AI free" as a product and sell it back to you now, while stealing your content to sell AI as a product.

That's desperation.

Amusing to see the rhetorical flourish that betting against AI is betting against thermodynamics.

That's exactly backwards! Thermodynamics is AI's enemy! Don't take my word for it, ask Nvidia, they readily admit that energy constraints are the biggest problem for data centers.

The American Nazis are deeply upset that their fascism isn't making them as popular as they thought it would and instead seems to be engendering distaste.

That can't hold - they'll either figure out how to obtain popularity through policy (not likely), get more violent and fail, or fizzle and fail.

Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

This will be an interesting fight. He will want to do it, very desperately, because he knows it will improve his and his party's popularity.

There will be some conservatives that won't want him to do it, because it will undermine their efforts to justify tax cuts for rich people.
Trump's promised $2,000 tariff checks would probably cost $450 billion, per a new analysis. At that price, the dividend would leave nothing for the president's promised uses of the money, like paying down debt and bailing out farmers.
Trump's $2,000 tariff checks would boost growth at a $450B cost, study says
The president says the checks are going out by mid-2026, though Congress will have to sign off first.

I first learned about Rebecca Heineman and her huge contributions to the PC gaming industry from this series of interviews nearly 15 years ago.

If you've been playing games for more than a decade, you have played something this woman touched, most likely:

God fucking dammit, RIP.
RIP to the legendary @burgerbecky.bsky.social. Her accomplishments were as amazing as they were numerous, and I count myself lucky to have met her in person.

I also worked on the remaster of Killing Time, a game she was directly involved in. Hope our paths cross again Rebecca, wherever that may be.

as a white liberal with Southern roots, quite frankly, I think other white liberals from the South need to get the fuck over their oddly defensive attitude about what should be pretty blindingly obvious.
I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there
