Mildly interesting:

Reading an old Tennyson poem from the early 1800s and he refers casually to the known use of bay leaves to add piquancy to custard. I'd never heard of this, but apparently it was once quite common. Seems like the rare dish where bay could shine.

AI in science fiction: "Skynet became self-aware and launched a nuclear strike, followed by an army of sentient robots"

Pro-AI people: Look how good AI is at this thing AI is good at!

Anti-AI people: Look how bad AI is at this thing AI is bad at!

Any interaction between the two: *incoherent screeching*

Can we please, for the love of God, move past this stage of the debate?

Articles like this really highlight a trend in tech companies that I keep meaning to post about. I basically posit that enshittification is all the fault of the Divine Right of Kings arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025...

Enough is enough: I’ve jettisoned Google in favor of a search engine that doesn’t treat me like a product.

This has happened fewer than a dozen times.
But what if a nuke on the Moon opens a portal to another dimension where demons covered in red-hot chainsaws want to come to Earth and eat all our chocolate?

The White House was forced to react to South Park as Trump completely loses it with rage, calling the show “not relevant” and "hanging on by a thread," despite the show recently securing a $1.5 billion deal.

Trump is considering suing over ‘tiny penis’ allegations.

This is genius level work by Ned and Wayne showcasing the power of comics to tell a story and educate. When I teach comics [Sequential Narrative] my presentation also starts with the Lascaux Caves and includes Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Bayeux Tapestry. Even safety cards on a plane are comics!
One my favourite Bananaman comics I’ve ever done is a time travel story where the art style matched the era. Wayne Thompson’s art is so lovely in this.

I probably shouldn't... but on some level, I really do kinda hope that he'll actually piss Canada off enough that they just turn off the oil and timber supply

Will we listen to his words today?

One other 7/7 thread today. Because I think how the bus network got running again is a real testament to some serious heroes that day:

The bus drivers and staff who got that network running again and got London home that night.

And TfL/the Mayor disobeyed the Security Services to make it happen /1

Sigh.

Sorry, America, but I just don't think you should be allowed to choose your own leaders any more.

Leave it to sensible people.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

American democracy, even when it worked, was far from the best kind. Great stuff by 1788 standards but it’s 2025. Other countries have found better ways of structuring political institutions, allocating power, and funding elections.

I found this gels well with my own experiences:

"AI here is my problem, fix it for me" is a path to suffering

"AI here is my problem, help me to understand it to a level where I can fix it" means you learn instead of succumbing to AI brainrot
