The UN General Assembly resolution against torture was rejected by only three countries: the US, Israel, and Argentina, who remind the world that they oppose even the most basic principles of humanity.

You might not like it, but this is what peak male performance looks like
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever before, and while it may be consumer smart, it comes at a cost to work productivity and the U.S. economy.

I've been thinking about this for a little while now and can't quite pin down why it's making me so uncomfortable

Is it the normalisation of fascism as a term or it being discarded once more as an exaggeration "we" can "all" laugh about "together"
Reporter: Are you affirming that you think the president is a fascist?

Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe.

Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.

I get these. I also get emails from people who tell me they taught themselves malware reversing and forensics with ChatGPT and they have discovered incredibly sophisticated malware on their phone that could only have been put there by a state actor. They send me their chat logs as "evidence."
I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

It’s fun to think about the surgeon who will botch your surgery 20 years from now and what he’s doing at this moment. He just ran all his homework through ChatGPT. He just read that article about vaccines and autism at the CDC website. He just watched an Instagram video about the moon landing hoax.

SUCKING UP IS AN ENORMOUS, VIOLENTLY SNAPPING RED FLAG

at the very best, they’re gearing up to use you in a way that’s to your detriment. and that’s the BEST option.
finding out that sycophancy doesn't trigger everyone's fight or flight response might be among the worst discoveries of the 2020s for me, and trust me it has stiff competition.
In a world in which people with too much power and influence desperately need to be told and to understand when they are wrong, we are suddenly all inescapably drowning in sycophancy machines.

Finally, I know of at least one case where the letter writer, deep into an episode of AI-induced psychosis, asked the LLM why scientists were not responding. The machine suggested that perhaps the scientists were trying to steal his discovery.

This will get someone killed sooner or later.

i expect to be pilloried for this but

this is at least partially a result of the type of very popular YA fixated on main characters who are special NOT bc of what they DO, but bc of their (surprise) heritage

these books are usually also full of “races” with strongly stereotyped fixed traits
The tech content on TikTok is honestly just so unbelievably full of stereotypes about how coding requires a special brain or whatever, or extremely gender coded stereotypes about roles. Exhausting stuff.

So jarring to witness the AI industry's daily crowing about new models and improved metrics ("SOTA benchmarks across the board!", "1M-token context window") knowing that they'll still be crap in real life settings (and that most of the metrics still trace back to eugenics).
