My prevailing suspicion right now is that the majority of *all* AI compute demand, worldwide, is Microsoft, Amazon, and Google (at a stretch), with most of that going toward either OpenAI or Anthropic. I do not think robust demand exists outside these two companies. If I am right that is very bad.

Today I discovered that people have been uploading old stock photo CD-ROMs to the Internet Archive and now I'm obsessed with the mid-'90s business-core aesthetic.

If you live in Colorado get out there and make some noise about this however you can
Donald Trump hired Peter Thiel’s AI company Palantir to vacuum up Americans’ data.

Dems in Palantir’s home state are now pushing new legislation to block watchdog groups & citizens from filing consumer protection lawsuits against AI giants like Palantir.

@hudsongiles.bsky.social is a fact checker extraordinaire who has stopped me from making dumb mistakes in reporting many times! He's also revealing details about Elon Musk's engineers trying to get into NOAA.
This DOGE Engineer Has Access to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Sources tell WIRED that NOAA employees were ordered to give an engineer from Elon Musk’s DOGE task force access to all of the agency’s Google sites by the end of business on Wednesday.

speaking of my "ranch" ... i think I have finally chosen a name. (squee!) I’ll share it soon’ish, maybe. xo

my tip for these dark days is to start cultivating your crow army. they won't help in any meaningful way, but it does at least give your neighborhood a vaguely ominous feel

Eddie just mentioned that Microsoft paid like 2.5 billion for Minecraft and I enjoy that, like, the "bleeding edge technology" at OpenAI is only worth like 5.6 Minecrafts in Microsoft's opinion

To be clear, mere hours - maybe even less - after saying Sora was out OpenAI stopped accepting new account registrations with no clear timeline. OpenAI bait and switched the entire tech media. There's no way this company can afford to have their video generator available to the public. Swindled!

For anyone who might need it (including me eventually, probably)
I don't know who needs to know this, but Pro Publica has an online thing that will format a letter to your US health insurance company to demand the records behind a claim denial. (which the insurance is then legally required to provide in most cases)

Insurance then denied coverage for the surgery, saying it was elective.

The surgery to remove the MALIGNANT TUMOR was elective.

So I appealed, and the week before the surgery, they canceled my policy on grounds that Crohn's Disease is a preexisting condition.

the world's a mess, work's a mess, so obviously gotta throw on The Terror in the background. You know, for comfort.
