Billy Bob likes hamburgers.

Hamburgers are tasty.

Hamburgers are delicious.

Hamburgers are life.

When I watch a Godzilla, superhero, or Transformers film, I’m always thinking about the financial, logistical, and economic hurdles of the destruction.

Who pays to rebuild Chicago after it’s been leveled in a Transformers movie?

It shouldn’t be forgotten that a big piece of Mamdani’s campaign was simply “cities are cool and lots of people enjoy living in them” which in and of itself dismantles alot of rightwing talking points

Something I've changed my mind about is how much of the war on inflation that was central to the birth of neoliberalism was an actual product of mass opinion and not just elite desire for austerity and the disciplining of labor.

Fun fact: nearly all the Chinese electric cars use LFP batteries, which are super cheap, long lasting, use no toxic cobalt, and have a bit reduced capacity

LFP batteries were developed in the US at UT Austin

But they are only made in China - every one in the US currently is imported
For literally decades climate hawks and progressives have warned that internal combustion will die off and the tech of the future is electric + battery power and that if we didn’t seize the initiative China would eat our lunch and…welp!
China is probably going to pass 50% EV new car sales this year. ICE technology is a dead man walking www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

In 1992, Bill Clinton won the presidential election promising voters that he’d be a “different kind of Democrat”. In 2025, the voters took that to heart and voted for a different kind of Democrat, Zohran Mamdani, instead of Andrew Cuomo who Clinton himself had endorsed.

leftists are consistently labeled as out of touch extremists, but there isn’t a single prominent left position this unpopular
"Do you want America to be at war with Iran?"

No: 85%
Yes: 5%

not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns

los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

Fascists hate walkable cities

Because they show that you can build diverse communities

And that these communities will stand up for eachother

The fact that every protest has been largely peaceful except LA and there’s 50 angles of the cops starting the violence really drives home how manufactured the California crisis is

But what happened in Minnesota is manufactured in another sense but way more real and terrifying

Nothing has prepared you to live under Trump 2 as much as growing up in 1980s/90s Latin America. It was exactly like that! The sudden announcements changing everything, the overwhelming uncertainty, the sheer vertigo and whiplash. Plus, the sense that democracy is fragile and could collapse...

I will say that it is funny that three positions that were the core of my youth: the current neoliberal trade regime is bad, the Iraq War is a monstrous mistake and George W Bush sucks, have now become right-wing canon.

This is my old city journalist brain firing but I believe that the USA way of isolating everybody into unwalkable suburbia, requiring private cars for existence, & removing true public space has had a disastrous effect on the US's sense of community & empathy and we must, but won't, deal with that
