those who predicted authoritarianism were both dismissed, & deeply misunderstood, by the media

The Americans Who Saw All This Coming—but Were Ignored and Maligned
Call them the Cassandras: the people—mostly not white and male—who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they “alarmists,” and how did “anti-alarmism” become cool?

there's not much ideological space on the left for your party. if you are a normal left wing voter who dislikes labour anti trans and anti immigrant stances, you can vote green. if you dislike the greens dumb foreign policy stances you can vote lib dem.

Finally got round to setting up a Substack! And I've published the piece I shared with a few of you last month - on the intellectual crisis within Labour's liberal wing.

Intellectually adrift, where does Labour’s liberal wing go from here?
The tradition of Gaitskell, Crosland, Jenkins, Blair and Brown stands at a crossroads.

A year and a half after far right riots stoked by anti-immigration rhetoric, the government has moved from "process cases quickly" to "refugees will never obtain permanent status" and the opposition is arguing for mass deportations, despite immigration figures collapsing in the same time.

it is in my view rather odd to hyperfixate on a litigation of whether the BBC works well or badly when the vector of attack is whether it should exist. it is also rather odd to hyperfixate on a litigation of whether it should exist when the discussion is whether it works well or badly

Hancox-Li never misses
“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”
Billionaires Are Hoarding Power, Not Money

It makes me sick how so many people are saying it's OK to misgender Hailey because her employer won't ban Singal 😦😦😦

(I mean this in earnest)
I’m not a bro, please don’t use that term with me.

One thing I really hope we can leave behind in the 2010s/early 2020s is the idea that being cynical = being wise.

If you want to have an impact on the world, that involves being sincere. Yes people will sneer, but sneering has no impact. Genuine sincerity breaks barriers and moves mountains.

"They're being ironic!!" I don't care, these sorts of 'ironic' jokes have poisoned everything, these people deserve to be mocked
it’s kind of annoying how complaining about transplants has become the new hipster xenophobia

It's true of the govt at large too. Nobody in and around Labour can cope with incompetence as an explanation for its issues, so keep imbuing things with hidden genius or hidden malice as appropriate.

Trans people change their sex.

This is what "trans rights are human rights" actually means.
Rowling's target is trans people, her method is the destruction of our liberty.
Okay but f'real though, you really see here the staggering illiberalism of it all, the *insistence* that our fate has been determined for us by outside forces that it would be blasphemous to resist
August 11, 2025 at 4:07 AM
Crazy how the "respectable centrist" opinion is now "trans people can't exist" and the "ally" opinion is now "trans people can't exist but we should be nice to people who think they're trans."

You know what the secret is, kids?

The secret is that we're all fucking terrified. None of us have legitimacy. We are all largely powerless to set the terms of discourse about us, which still largely happens on cissexist terms, and so we scream at each other to feel a sense of control we lack.

But society is uncomfortable acknowledging the physicality of the trans body, because mutability of the flesh is a threat to the hierarchy of meat. To acknowledge our bodies as a subject we can know is to transgress upon the authority of the divine sausage and the brotherhood of its sacred priests.

Hm, this reads like some of the writing on Hijra that Bhatt has criticised.
@taliabhatt.itch.io do you know if this is the same sort of thing?

What the hell is this? Starmer??
This Starmer quote on Churchill is utterly dreadful. We give Churchill a lot of credit in Origin Story, but he was unquestionably racist & imperialist & responsible for the Bengal famine. Many British people dislike him for entirely justifiable reasons. Questioning their decency is outrageous.

Lol

The relationship between a lot of Westminster politicos and experts in electoral behaviour is the same as the relationship between homeopaths and medical researchers.

90 per cent of the people doing it don't want to talk about incumbency bonuses, or campaign dynamics or whatever. They want to have a proxy debate about the policies they want. But it's much nicer to just have a debate about the policies!

Just to make the additional point that today's ruling does cast new light on the Sullivan report's recommendations.

The demand to record sex at birth, distinct from legal sex and lived sex provides the vector to enact distinctions like the one forced by the Supreme Court. It's not neutral.
