NEW: There’s this annoying assumption that while oligarchy may explain many bad trends in our society, it somehow has nothing to do with the housing crisis.

This argument is amplified by movements bankrolled by oligarchs - even as reams of data prove it is a flagrant lie.
Pay No Attention To Oligarchs Raising Your Rent
A brief look at the absurd idea that billionaires and corporations have nothing to do with America's housing crisis.

GUARDIAN: “Per head, 🇺🇸 output is six times China’s, and yet, inexplicably, there seem to be more abjectly poor Americans than Chinese. 🇺🇸 inequality is breathtaking… keeps getting worse…”

Wanting to address this isn’t radical.

NOT wanting to is.

‘Medicare for All’ still big. “In a survey of 1,207 likely voters [from] Nov. 14–17, 2025, ...65% of voters [supported] a Medicare for All system, described as a ‘national health insurance program... that would cover [everyone] & replace... private health insurance...’" jacobin.com/2025/11/medi...
Medicare for All Disappeared. Its Popularity Didn’t.
The demand for Medicare for All went from the center of the discourse to political exile in record time. But the policy's popularity never faded. A new poll finds strong majority support for the neglected idea among Americans across the political spectrum.

ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

You can see the shift in movies as well. Silent films commonly called out police torture and corruption. Dirty cops were all over mainstream classic Hollywood releases.

I haven’t done a formal tally but “one bad apple” and “the crooks get off if I play by the rules” took over by the 1970s-1980s.
Fun fact: this is explicitly why Dick Wolf created Law & Order: he violently hates defense attorneys and felt tere weren't enough shows about how defendants and their lawyers are scum

(also when somebody "gets off on a technicality" that actually means the cops committed a crime against them)

When the GOP calls every social safety net measure “socialism,” votes like this matter in a policy context.

House Minority Leader Jeffries voting with the GOP in favor of this resolution is showing his ultra-wealthy donors exactly who he fights for.

It’s not the people.
