Not only does “AI” produce mediocre garbage, it has a huge environmental footprint *that we cannot measure*. The government is allowing these companies to act like literal outlaws. They steal our data, they will enjoy relaxed building regulations and they refuse to disclose their water consumption.
AI boom means regulator cannot predict future water shortages in England
Datacentres, which do not have to report amount of water used to cool servers, leave Environment Agency with no idea of shortfalls

Ticketmaster now give you the option to buy (for £3!) a 'Souvenir Ticket' alongside an e-ticket, a "collectible...classic Ticketmaster paper ticket", which makes me pine for an earlier, simpler time.

I don't 'refuse to use' AI, I just don't use AI; in the same way that I don't shoplift, or plagiarise other people's books - it requires no effort of will, it's just not something I would think of doing
Bizarrely framed article about the people (all women) who ‘refuse to use AI’. And a #philosophy professor who says “The moment to opt out of #AI has already passed”. Oh well. That’s that then. 🤷‍♂️ #AIEthics www.bbc.com/news/article...
The people refusing to use AI
Worried about the environment and the loss of skills, some people are resisting the rise of AI.

Trans women are women and no court judgement can change that. Without wanting to diminish the negative effect that legal oppression has on trans lives, there is no reason why lawyers and judges are qualified to make this argument over actual experts in the field.

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy.

Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. 🤐🤐

it's going to sound gimmicky but I think that women shouldn't have to read the Gaiman piece but all men should read it to the end, just as all men should have read all the long reads about the Pelicot case, so many seem to still not realise the extent to which so many men hate and want to hurt us

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️
Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

sorry to be both blunt and righteous but I think this is also true of people making "funny" images of eg Trump or Musk looking silly, or doing stupid ChatGPT prompts for fun - there's no right way to use generative AI! all of it is slop destroying the planet and making horrid people more powerful!
every time I see a mutual post some piece of AI shit, I die a little more inside - why don't you just stab me with a fucking ice pick instead

More women have been attacked by other women in restrooms for being suspected of being trans in 2024 than women have ever been attacked in a restroom by a trans woman in all of recorded history.
In 2024 more women were attacked by another woman in a public restroom than by a trans woman.

In fact I don't think any were attacked by a trans woman.

I love this story, it's a perfect precinct for a teen drama. Friday Night Lights but with Buddhism.
I would absolutely punch a baby seal to get the CW version of this (RIP to most of the CW tho 😢)
The strong young man blocking for his fellow St. Anthony Village Huskies this fall was Jalue Dorjee, who deftly balances life as a fun-loving teenager and a reincarnated Buddhist lama recognized around the world.

What I think is interesting about Gregg Wallace is not, in fact, Gregg Wallace at all.

It’s the way that, as someone who watched Masterchef since it was called Masterchef Goes Large… how many female contestants start out brilliant and then over several eps their performance collapses.
