Public librarian, trash TV watcher, crochet addict, dog and human mom.
Through no conscious effort, recently I have 1) listened to The Princess Bride audiobook, narrated by Reiner, 2) watched When Harry Met Sally, 3) listened to Cary Elwes' audiobook As You Wish, where Reiner was a contributor, read his excerpts, and obviously was the heart of the story. What a loss.

I gotta give it up to the writers tho. If NYC elects a Muslim mayor on the day Dick Cheney died, that is one hell of a slow played story arc. Every time you want to fire 2025's writers room they give you a little narrative resolution as a treat.

My staff at the library organized a pumpkin-decorating competition. Patron voting starts on Wednesday. Because I have old taste and no chill, here is my submission:

Hey a thing I really don’t want to get lost here is that while Tylenol doesn’t cause autism, IT’S FINE TO BE AUTISTIC. Let’s not grant them the premise that autism should be eradicated in our way to correct the science, okay? Okay.

This is always my "WTF" moment. I am raising my autistic darling as best I can, and cannot fathom them being anything other than themselves as they are, and choosing danger and death over having this delightful creature?! I could never.
I don't believe that vaccines cause autism.

But the concept of someone just letting a baby die in case they perceive the world differently than their parents? Is repugnant.

Two trials will be repeated endlessly despite always producing the same results:

2) Does AI improve productivity? (no)

Prepare for a guy punch of the best kind, from Scalzi's "Being Poor." He has written many great things, and I agree that it's among the best.
1/3 20 years ago today, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I wrote a piece called "Being Poor," to answer, in a way that I hoped would stick, why so many people stayed in New Orleans to face the storm. It was and remains one of the best things I've ever written.

Sweet baby jeebus WHY would you want to be paying someone caring for your family LESS?!??? This would simply be a path to more elder abuse and worse outcomes for our most vulnerable.

I have two things to say about the judge being arrested by the FBI.

1. Obstructing immigration is illegal but also morally correct.

2. I don’t believe a word the FBI or ICE says. They are lying. The judge is innocent.

Ohioans, they are coming for our libraries. The state house has passed a budget proposal that removes the PLF and moves libraries to a straight line-item of funding for ~100m loss. The Public Library Fund (PLF) keeps libraries in Ohio independent and they just hate that we aren't under their thumb.

This is fucking AWFUL librarianship. Parental duties to be aware of what their kids are reading and a librarians job to give any patron all the access they want work hand in hand, and should not be substituted for each other. Yuck.

I work in a library in a rural, red area, and food insecurity is something that a huge number of my patrons are dealing with. We have a Little Free Pantry outside the library that is filled three times a week with donations from a local grocery store, and it's almost always empty in a day or two.
RFK Jr. said in his Fox News OpEd that “Good nutrition remains a best defense against most chronic and infectious illnesses”.

The best diet in the world will not prevent infection if you are unvaccinated and sharing air with someone who has measles.

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons:

-We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S.

-The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous.

I just got off a statewide zoom call with 131 library directors in Ohio. While morale is not high, we all ended with the knowledge that we're not going to preemptively comply with anything and will keep on doing everything we can to provide safe, healthy, open, accepting spaces for our communities.

if the president can say “i don’t like the department of energy,” and within a week it’s closed, then the constitution means nothing, and the president’s entire claim to power is the loyalty of the military. either he is constrained by the constitution or he’s a dictator, there isn’t a middle ground
