My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

If there is a strategy to keep the US on board as long as possible, it surely by now seems to cost so much attention and resources that not much is left for thinking through European alternatives. All the while US domestic politics is largely ignored and its ramifications for US foreign policy.
Too much attention in Europe being paid to Trump's incoherently futile diplomacy and not enough to his dangerously destabilising actions in US domestic politics

Ukraine, the future of war is now
Ukraine’s strikes into Russia illustrate the historic role of surprise in battlefield success. They also test the country's fragile relationship with the fractious leadership of the United States.

Pericles’ “your empire is like a tiranny” quote remains one of the most overlooked lines in the whole canon of western classical literature.
Here. I've written about Steve Miran's earlier plan to use tariffs as a form of "burden sharing" (extortion) against American allies.
