So neu ist diese "Form der Kriegsdienstverweigerung" übrigens nicht. Schon 2001 hat Michael Geyer herausgearbeitet, dass die Ablehnung der Wiederbewaffnung in den 1950er Jahren erheblich dadurch motiviert war, der Bundesrepublik als Staat der "Besatzungsmächte" die Legitimation abzusprechen. (1/4)

Besides everything else, this also again leads back to the old question, how credible extended nuclear deterrence can be, if the US doesn't want to play a significant role in conventional defense of Europe anymore.

This chapter needs to be thrown in the face of every European official who has spent the last 12 months optimistically saying things are the same.
Relying on the old Atlanticism is just malpractice at this point, and putting pro-Americanism ahead of leaders' own citizens.

As far as I can see, this nat sec strategy is far harsher on Europe than on Russia. There is no mention of a threat from Russia or of deterrence, only that "re-establishing strategic stability" is a priority. Europe is cast as a major threat to freedom. A radical, dangerous document.

None of this is new, but it serves as a stark reminder that the complacency felt after the NATO summit in June was misplaced. It also reminds us that the the strategy of keeping the US on board for as long as possible, has itself grave risks to the democratic fabric of Europe.

The new US National Security Strategy says explicitly, that the US should intervene in European domestic policy. It is difficult to interpret "Cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations." otherwise in the context of everything else this government says and does.

1. Buzzwords. Ofc you can call defensive lines as described here as "multi-domain enablers" but we already have a word for this: elastic defense.
2. I am sceptical if you can assign "the bulk of the static defense to machines". (1/2)
