Courtesy of #LongCovid und #MECFS.

Today in 1961, the Soviet Union tested the largest-ever thermonuclear bomb—a 50-Megaton RDS-220 (originally designed for a 100 Megaton yield). The device, later dubbed “Tsar Bomba,” was dropped by a Tu-95 Bear bomber and exploded about 13,123 feet over Novaya Zemlya above the Arctic Circle.

One of the better nuclear war movies in that it well captures the uncertainty, confusion, and chaos of nuclear decision makers and the info available to them.

What I find a bit amusing about the reporting on STEADFAST NOON is the emphasis on unprecedented transparency. Why? There was a nuclear exercise in which NATO was already very open before—even more open. That was, of course, the infamous CARTE BLANCHE exercise (1955). www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3ZN...

It's crazy that resilience is one of THE buzzwords of our time, while the very embodiment of societal resilience—the welfare state—is under constant attack.

A year into this and it is still remarkable to see how much analysis of America's ability to influence the trajectory of key flashpoints in the global system simply skip over how far growing domestic instability inside the US will affect America's ability to project power

Just gave a briefing in Berlin last week on possible restrictions on NATO operations by the NAC and/or national governments in a crisis or war and what that could mean for NATO's current defense approach.

While NATO could do better, a reminder:

All air defenses are leaky. The bomber always does get through. Really. Enough of them, anyway, to make a dent. And in the nuclear age, does not take many to ruin a day.

Stop imagining perfect shields, iron or golden domes.

Start imagining resilience.

Maybe I'm getting old, but wouldn't it have been considered deeply unconservative in the past to try to justify anything based on an (alleged) "popular mandate"?

I think it is important to understand, that AI hallucinations are not just "some" mistake an AI makes, that will be cleaned out at some newer version, but an inherent result of how LLMs work. They are build to create coherent results, here scientific references, not to be accurate.
