Deregulation
One of the constants of conservatism and it runs from Trump all the way down to Bari Weiss is “can you imagine these people trying to run a restaurant and not giving everyone diarrhea within 12 minutes?”

I saw The Insider in a Lyon cinema original language with French subtitles. Unrelated: At the [cancer agency], excerpts from the Philip Morris documents disclosure were tacked up on a cork board.

“Imagining alternatives” thus they’re coming for science fiction
Frame: the humanities are an unprofitable burden to universities

Negation: actually many depts make money, students with humanities degrees do very well

Kirby: IT'S AN IDEOLOGICAL ATTACK. Even if it's profitable they don't want people asking questions about society or imagining alternatives
My humanities dept was relevant. Majors were up. Courses were 100% enrolled. Revenue positive, GE serving, etc etc. We were still eliminated.

The problem is ideological administrative destruction. Couldn’t write a report, a self study, or a spreadsheet against that.

Primary them all and block anybody who comes with the “at this crucial juncture the most important thing is that we win.” if they believed that they wouldn’t do this and with friends like them nobody needs enemies
Here are the 28 Dem Senators who voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes & a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent: Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE), Chris Coons (DE), ->
By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

Still love Manchester’s line about the failure of the Renaissance “It says much about the Middle Ages that in the year 1500, after a thousand years of neglect, the roads built by the Romans were still the best on the continent.”

Like the “typical use” condom study which came to like 80% contraception effectiveness when “typical” includes non-use (compare: “perfect use”)
Ok this is important. A big myths
out there is that studies show masks don’t work. When you look at what the studies measured, what they actually show is masks don’t work *if you don’t wear them.* They didn’t measure the tool, they measured the wearers behavior. www.independent.co.uk/news/health/...

The ways that social media affects audiences' perceptions of wildlife is one of my research areas.... lmk if you want to work on a little project around this topic!! I have seen few papers tackle AI-generated animal videos, and would love to know their effects.

Retired Red Dead player here. I have heard so many players come up with super boring ideas for content that would suit 0% of the user base. The user should not be driving the bus. Industry needs feedback sure but this is research and needs thinking through.
Anyway, yeah, I really dislike how gamers are able to strong-arm developers like this. It’s not something you see much in other mediums, thank god. Imagine a novelist being pestered into changing *their* creation because people complain about how it isn’t exactly 100% what they wanted.

Not forming a theory per se, but regime seems to side with any dictatorship and especially against Muslim groups.
ICE has taken Chinese dissident Guan Heng into custody and is threatening to return him to China.

Guan Heng risked his life to film the Uyghur concentration camps—the same camps Secretary of State Rubio opposed when he sponsored the “Uyghur Force Labor Prevention Act” as a US senator.
In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.
