An official government account using the word “remigration” is not normal. It’s an imported term from European far-right movements that refers to mass expulsion. Democracies do not use population-purification language. #holdfast #SteadyState

I know how they got to that point.

Because we’re a few steps behind, living through the “getting to that point” right now in the UK.
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.

Draft Tory legislation on removing indefinite leave to remain is insane.

Would chuck out those not earning over £38K - including many pensioners!

+ social protections seems to include child benefit, so load of people with (British!) kids!

They'd remove my sis & mum who've been here 50 years.

Great piece on the fash asylum hotel protests, which are tiny but being covered as incipient civil war, even in the fairly-sane press, like they're some massive wave in popular opinion.
Some thoughts on the racist 'protests' in the UK

We must challenge the mainstream narrative that 'the people' with 'legitimate concerns' are to be found amongst a handful of racists, while the many more fighting for a better future are ignored

‘The people’, ‘legitimate concerns’ and the far-right ‘protests’

If 'common law rights' were equivalent to ECHR rights, then the UK would never have lost a case in Strasbourg. But it has. 1/
@sirjjkc.bsky.social highlights here what we can call the 'Policy Exchange fallacy':

if 'common law rights and fundamental freedoms' [sic] provide equivalent protection to the ECHR ones, then what does repealing the latter achieve?
A Reform government might repeal the HRA, pull out of the ECHR and potentially other international instruments. But would it legislate to disapply common law rights and protections (eg against torture) which opponents of the ECHR are fond of saying are of an equivalent standard?

Wrote this analysis on the asylum hotels court ruling yesterday morning for @thenewworldmag.bsky.social.

It’s mostly held up but for one thing: the pressure on the councils has come even more quickly than I thought, and among those inflaming it is Kemi Badenoch, who’s urged Tory councils to act.
“This ruling essentially writes the far right’s playbook for it: launch a protest outside an asylum hotel … Once there is violence, get local residents to put pressure on the council to take the hotel to court, and try to secure an injunction. Rinse and repeat.” www.thenewworld.co.uk/james-ball-t...
