Incapable of shutting up about owls. Queer neurodivergent leftist millennial. I make art sometimes (not as often as I want to). Expect cat photos (her name is June). Wildlife rehabilitator & educator. Unreasonably goofy.

Not to be all “omg millennials look soooo young teehee” or anything but I did just get asked, a month before my 39th birthday, what I am majoring in. Dude should definitely get his eyes checked but I’ll take it anyway 😂

Also this morning on the way to work I watched a Bald Eagle snatch a dead squirrel off the road and carry it off while being chased by several crows. Quicker than waiting in line at Dunkin I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I wasn’t kidding about this btw. That one job didn’t pan out but I’m now working at UMaine in Orono, just moved here last week, drove from Santa Fe by myself (with my cat), currently living with aforementioned bff. Hell yeah.
Visited (or drove/flew through, mostly) 14 states in the past week. Best trip ever except for the part where I had to leave my best friend’s new house in Maine and fly back to New Mexico. Already have one job app submitted in Bangor, will do everything to get back there asap 🥲

Started a new job recently, and I’m now realizing that I’m gonna have to get used to being expected to awwww over photos of people’s dogs and kids instead of cats and wildlife. I’m not a hater I’m just not actually interested in dogs or children and I’ve never had to fake it before 🫤

Keeping my mouth shut about this on other platforms bc I wanna Let People Enjoy Things but this feels more like shouting into a void so: OH MY GOD SHUT UP ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT WHO FUCKING CARES HOLY SHIT SHE SUCKS SO SO SO HARD

She’s not deep or special she’s just another boring-ass rich white lady

In case anyone needs an 18-second distraction and/or mental health boost, here’s June getting lost in the sauce (the sauce being Churu)

Last night I found a paper I wrote in grad school, about 15 yrs ago, about ways to assess and improve students’ access to sex education materials in Indiana secondary school libraries.

That paper would look awfully different if I wrote it now, and not in ways I might have thought. 🫠

💯💯💯💯💯!!! It takes so much more than love and passion to care for animals. It even takes more than money (often in short supply). You HAVE TO have proper training, skills, depth and breadth of knowledge, ethics, oversight, support, infrastructure, certifications/licenses, etc, etc, etc
Loving animals does not necessarily mean you are qualified to care for said animals, in the case of many a viral exotic animal “rescue.” The average social media viewer does not understand that what they’re seeing is animal abuse because they don’t know how to identify it

all i want is to one day own a modest sized home in a walkable neighborhood and raise money for shelter animals. wear an outfit i like, walk to the grocery store, buy some nectarines, feed cats, and live in peace. just don't understand why achieving this is so hard

Hey if you must bring your loud anxious dog into a public place (and here’s an idea: don’t), perhaps don’t bring them into a tiny waiting room and just stay there while they bark and growl anytime something happens. You can, and should, fuckin Leave

It was kind of a ripoff of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with an unreasonable number of Monty Python references and a very “awkward teenager” title (“Sanity is Never a Good Thing”). Writing it was a blast though and I still quote parts of it to myself occasionally haha
so, to the writers... what was the terrible novel you wrote at 14? Mine was about a redhaired freedom fighter called Eleanor Sunstripe

I’m sitting here eating a Klondike bar and, apparently, about to find out what my cat would do for one

Big long birding day today. 40 species! I don’t have a real camera so these photos I took with my phone through binoculars will have to do. Very cooperative Green Heron model, plus a bunch of nesting Double-crested Cormorants! Northern New Mexico, USA

Finally saw some Horned Larks today!! Plus Common Nighthawks, Black-crowned Night Herons, a Lark Sparrow, various other neat birds, and a bat (not sure what species though, maybe big brown?) 😍 Video is shit quality but features a lark yelling a lot

Opened facebook after being out birding and thought someone was reporting some kind of weird coot or cormorant

My cat, who once grabbed a fly out of the air to eat it and once nearly started a fight with an enormous centipede on the bookshelf, is staring at the floor slow-blinking at a bug

Maybe it will help a _little_ if I and others like me start saying publicly for the record that we just don’t use ChatGPT.

Writing can be really hard — organizing a piece of writing can be especially hard — but I don’t use ChatGPT.

If you read my stuff you’re reading something an LLM can’t do.

“I asked ChatGPT” well I asked the three Fates and the one with the scissors got very agitated when I told her you were using your one precious life thread talking to that cursed thing

Comms professional here, and YES. Also, lots of people - many of them intelligent and competent in other ways - are not skilled in writing, so LLM text output may sound downright eloquent compared to what some professional adults can come up with, even if it’s actually incorrect or meaningless.
As a comms expert and socialist, my grand theory of LLMs/Copilot/etc is that the reason people look at the garbage these machines produce and go "this looks plausible and coherent" is because a huge amount of the text humans produce in their actual jobs is *also* insubstantial waffle 🧵

Would really appreciate it if news outlets would stop including “photo of screaming child receiving a vaccine” in articles about the current measles outbreak in my state (and others). It’s dangerous visual messaging and perpetuates fear of lifesaving medical care.

Went out birding with my mom while my parents were in town last weekend, and she let me try out her camera (my first time with a real - not cell phone - camera). I’m nitpicking this shot now of course but I’m also proud of it as a first attempt! Canyon Towhee with nesting material, Santa Fe NM
