Bilingualism is only acceptable when it’s a certain class of people doing it: whether it’s one of the royals kids learning Spanish from their nanny, or Nigel Farage’s own children speaking fluent German with their mother. It only becomes a racist moral panic when the hoi polloi have that ability too
What a fucking loser. Bilingualism is amazing and we should celebrate the weans who can speak multiple languages - it will probably be them who will allow the UK to thrive globally.

Aside from the rank xenophobia of this, having thousands of people looking for voluntary work will not be the godsend Mahmood might think. It will, on the contrary, be a logistical nightmare
Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

I want to explain a few things and then it might be clearer why UK trans people are upset.
In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia.
In 2005 I started medical transition. (1/13)

Definitely feels like a shift if The Atlantic is asking you to search a pirated database
There are tons of graphic novels, academic papers, film and TV scripts, & prose novels/nonfiction on the LibGen list Anthropic used.

As settlement approaches, make it easy for the class action lawyers to contact you! Here’s how

Part 1: is your work in Libgen?

Search LibGen, the Pirated-Books Database That Meta Used to Train AI

The comment, not the screenshot, constitutes a kind of reverse British exceptionalism that I see all the time here.

In this case the idea that the British are not great, or even mid, but exceptionally awful and THE ENTIRE WORLD KNOWS IT
saw this on Threads and I just don't think anyone has ever said "I can't wait to meet actual British people" in the entire history of the world

Still the worst
PLEASE don’t buy into Amazon’s booksale this week.

They are intentionally trying to eat into profits from Indie Bookstore Day this weekend, a really important annual event for our important community institutions.

Check out your local fave or bookshop.org.
Bookshop: Buy books online. Support local bookstores.
An online bookstore that financially supports local independent bookstores and gives back to the book community.

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

We went from “what good are the humanities?” to “suddenly, no one can read” in about a year, and the answer to the first question is the disinformation and lack of critical thinking you see all around you. *That* is why you need the humanities. This is what they prevent.

Dear tiny audience: if at this moment you are looking to understand the world through fiction, may I recommend The Cameraman by Matthew Kneale? Featuring an English family travelling through Europe in the 30s, believing fascism will solve all their problems. www.hive.co.uk/Product/Matt...

This is fantastic
Bellingcat is currently working with universities to develop open source investigation courses in various fields and creating student-led investigative hubs at those universities, which seems well timed.

"those jokes crossed the boundary so long ago it’s now a gentrified area"

👏👏👏
If you missed it/are interested I wrote this rant about lazy comedians blaming wokeness for their bad jokes because it drives me insane 😃😃😃😃😃
uh oh! It's the internet's darling
@brocklesnitch.bsky.social, with one of the best arguments about "wokeness in comedy" I've read - namely that hack comedians who are obsessed with it are just bad at their job.
