the fun thing about the word "comics" is that it is often used to refer to like five separate forms of publishing, all of which work in completely different ways and are united only by the fact that 99% of the people involved are not getting paid enough

Yes! This saved my ass so many times when I was starting out! People are often willing to talk about their experiences to help make yours better. A lot of times it was creators I didn’t really know very well! I just reached out as a professional, and they’d share their perspective.
It’s also totally OK to DM other creators you know and ask, “hey, I’m thinking of doing a project with X and I saw you did a project with them, did you have a good experience?”
