by age 34 you should:
-own an air fryer
-identify with an animal
-regularly forget to take pills
-be in a groupchat with sex perverts
-have a collection of useless artifacts you think are neat
-maintain a to do list of things you'll never actually do
-harbour soul crushing regret about what happened

At a certain point, we have to accept that liberal elites see anti-trans pushback as something we reasonably need to “hear out” is because they also think our existence is something up for debate. Because it also makes them uncomfortable! They see anti trans attacks as “effective” because they agree

Some percentage of the dems making these white flag waving concessions are just over thinking it / dumb / lost etc

But some of them actually just do think trans people are icky! Like maybe they’re folding because they agree our rights are some sort of luxury or progressive over-reach
My (poorly informed) take is that most Americans want to hold views that are acceptable. If anti-trans views are normalized, many will hold them. If anti-trans views are stigmatized, many will drop them. Hence the need for leaders to push to make transphobia as stigmatized & unacceptable as racism

pretty please: if you have democratic reps, call often. use sticks & carrots. you’re also fighting consultants & press narratives.

“they’ll eventually cave.”

who cares. every day someone who needs an abortion can get one is a win. every day an immigrant lives in peace is a win. every day a trans person can get meds or play field hockey or pee in public is a win. every kid whose library still has books on civil rights is a win.

“call your reps” is not enough for the moment.

*but*

if you give a shit about anyone at risk—immigrants, people of color, trans people, cis women—they need every vestige of institutional support left to hold up as long as possible. you sustain that through electeds not letting it be dismantled.

another reason i’d say, however tedious, it’s worth putting your dem reps into your contacts list & calling (or dropping local offices) often. it’s harder for carvilles & the press to say, “dem voters think they’re too left” if every rep has realtime data saying, “that’s *not* what my voters think.”
a feedback loop going on in dc right now where liberal polls show voters dislike the party approach, reporters cover that disdain as being the progressive wing’s fault, and then lawmakers and staff follow that instruction because they’re relying on those refracted signals

Liberals, tell me: If this is a real problem, if trans women athletes are dominating sports, easily winning first all the time and steamrolling cis women, can you name three of them?

This is why I feel like Sisyphus. I wrote about California passing (and successfully defending against repeal challenges) a nondiscrimination bill that protected trans student rights, including sports... 12 years ago. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

I thought this had been settled.

1) Trans people are less than 1% of the population. In any given jurisdiction you’d have 1 trans athlete competing against…who exactly?
2) “Basic rights” include the ability to participate in public life like playing sports or using locker rooms
3) The right has completely fabricated this “problem”

last guess was that there are ~4 million trans people in the US. there should be more. there aren’t more because a lot of trans people are dead.

there will be many more dead trans people before this is over unless a lot of cis folks quit saying “this is a distraction” & decide to stand with us.

wait, there’s more.

“a man's assertion that he is a woman, & his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with…humility & selflessness.”

1 bathroom ban cost $400m & a governorship.

“all trans people are inherently deceitful & criminal” costs nothing now.

the national conversation the rigjt is having in 2025 isn’t far off that TX bill.

it matters that the TX bill probably won’t pass. that’s good!

it also matters that this is being pitched & it won’t cost anyone anything. that’s real real bad!

it was never about sports or peeing. this is normal conversation now. look at what one bathroom bill cost them then.

i know some cis folks on here are at least kinda aware it’s bad right now for trans people in america, but sometimes it’s worth calling y’all back to 2016 when a single “transsexuals have to use the wrong bathrooms” bill cost north carolina the nba all-star game & $400 million.

this is normal now.
NEW - Texas Rep. Tom Oliverson has filed HB 3817, which would make it fraud to identify as a gender different from the one assigned at birth.

While it stands little chance of passing, it fits into a wider narrative that casts being trans as deceptive and fraudulent:

Proposed law could charge transgender Texans with fraud
Under HB 3817, Texans could be charged with "gender identity fraud" for identifying as a sex different from the one they were assigned at birth.

Honestly, looking at this externally, it still doesn't quite feel like solidarity has really clicked with people in the US at the moment. It's quite possible for the regime to be motivated by sexism *and* racism *and* transphobia *and* by Elon Musk's ket benders at the same time
The MAGAs are really, really blatantly firing a ton of women in the federal government and military for the crime of being women, and it is embarrassing when people ignore or downplay this.
YES.
I see this daily, despite a continuous stream of high-profile women fired for being female, or publicly denigrated as "DEI" hires.
Presumably these men are seeing the same news stories we are, and yet...the overwhelming fact pattern spelling out MISOGYNY in giant letters just doesn't register.
