You can’t tell if someone is disabled just by looking at them.

There’s no such thing as the “genuinely disabled”.

You are not entitled to a person’s entire medical history just so you can decide whether to believe them or not.

People are not faking disability, most are trying to fake being well.

I started following Alice years ago and learned so much from her words. She was talented, funny and a voice for the voiceless. Thank you, Alice. Rest in power.

Not the point, but Elon doesn't even know that The Odyssey and The Iliad are TWO DIFFERENT POEMS.

If you were pissed about Jimmy Kimmel being kicked off the air for a couple days, this should enrage you.
New: Conde Nast fired four employees who were among a group that confronted the company's head of human resources on Wednesday over the decision to fold Teen Vogue into Vogue/recent cuts. Employees who were fired included journalists from the New Yorker, Wired, and Bon Appétit.

Shaved 2,000 words off a 7,000-word story, and now it's all Grade-A meat, baby.

Does this woman not know what a social media manager is?
Perino: You have to stop at with the Twitter thing. If I were his wife, I would say you are making a fool of yourself, stop it… He's got a big job as governor of California but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little more serious.

Ah yes, the autoimmune disease that I inherited from both of my parents is totally my fault, my bad.

We is one of my All-Timers, but I'll be honest, in the four times I've read it, not once did I pick up on the fact that they are building a ship for space invading 😂 It's about so much more than that. Highly recommend, even if you don't like dystopian works.
The first dystopian novel was We (1921) by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin. It takes place in the One State, a totalitarian society constructed almost entirely of glass. The protagonist is an engineer tasked with constructing a spacecraft for the government to invade other planets. #WyrdWednesday

What is happening in Gaza is a genocide perpetrated by Israel and aided by the U.S., U.K. and any country providing support to Israel. Full stop. No room for nuance, interpretation or debate. "Never again" is happening now and has been for years. We are all complicit for watching and doing nothing.

Wow, a man in power listening to the people's feedback. How novel.
NEW: Gov Jared Polis (D) is dropping his plan for a $28.5M pedestrian bridge at the State Capitol, acknowledging overwhelming public opposition to his idea. #copolitics www.9news.com/article/news...

"no one wants a government handout"

It's OUR MONEY. Our. Money.

Every purchase, every paycheck, every year's filing, we pay into taxes. That is alllll a government money is. Our money, pooled in hopes it can be used to better everyone's lives, not to provide a "government handout" to the rich.

This is incredibly bleak. What is the point of art if not to experience the world through another person's view or to immerse yourself in an imaginary setting? I want AI to do the mundane tasks that keep me from reading all day, not to summarize art so I can go write emails for executives like this.

I read this book in... 2016? 2017? and I'm still recommending it to people. A work of art.
It's Pride month, so I'll say that my debut THE DEVOURERS, a novel about shapeshifters and queerness, sex and sexual violence, probably helped me figure out I was genderqueer & had experienced sexual assault (both belatedly, after publication). It also helps (v modestly) me earn an income:

If you can't see the point in commemorating the liberation of an entire race in the land of the free for one single day, you are not a patriot, you're an ignorant fool. Happy Juneteenth to those who celebrate, and double birds to those who don't!

Jonathan Joss was murdered in a horrific hate crime. His blood is on the hands of the San Antonio Police Department for failing to do anything about the threats to him and his husband in the past two years. I hope Tristan is able to find peace after such pain.
The heartbreaking statement from Jonathan Joss’s husband about his death.

Oh honey, you didn't even have *this* story in you. May he never have another byline.
This is from the guy who “wrote” that best book list that ran in the Chicago Sun Times and other papers yesterday. I actually feel a bit sorry for him, although he did cheat and was caught and should summarily be punished. Like he said, his writing career is over. It should be.

It's especially obnoxious that this AI book list news is all over the place today, a Tuesday, a day for talking about new releases. There's a new Alison Bechdel! Yiyun Li's memoir! Robert Macfarlane's Is a River Alive? Caitlin Starling's Starving Saints! Madeleine Thien's Book of Records! & more!

*sighs for eternity*
Of the books named on this reading list, Brit Bennet, Isabel Allende, Andy Weir, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Min Jin Lee, Rumaan Alam, Rebecca Makkai, Maggie O'Farrell, Percival Everett, and Delia Owens' titles are all books that DO NOT EXIST!!!

Just barely beat the buzzer to get a sub in for @brigidsgatepress.bsky.social Women of the Weird West call. I've been getting weirdly into westerns the past year, so I can't wait to read the final selection of stories, whether or not mine's in the mix. Good luck to everyone else subbing! #writersky
