November 11, 2025 Song Maureen Thorson It’s nearly Christmas. The bar’s half empty, which also means half full. Even the strangers know each other, the way people do when the righteous are in bed. An older man in a beret sits up front, with an amp and a guitar, and it’s too cold and late for irony. Suddenly, Hotel California. Everyone takes it up, a doxology in two dozen voices. What’s religion but everyone knowing the words? Afterwards, the bartender in cat-eye glasses laughs, says, “You guys bring out the worst in me, which is awesome.” The night fogs like breath on a mirror when we disperse.

November 7, 2025 Flour Mill, Andrew Wyeth (watercolor, 1959) J. Freeborn From a distance, the wall waves gently, like ticking under sheet. On approach, the lime wash is buckled, split. There is water damage and creeping damp. Ill-use rimes our mill and we, having no work to fill it, pass at respectable distance. Soft hands away in pockets, safe from the river’s stagnant gaze.

November 6, 2025 Fatherhood Daniel Lurie It’s my birthday and I’ve spent the day counting the 27 bones that make up a fist. My birth lies on a peg among the hay hooks and horse tack. Metal panels rot in the roof, so the sky watches with all its eyes. In one of the stalls, the straw is still damp with a sheep’s stillbirth. I soak my hands in the beaten- to-hell washroom sink. My father’s voice rests in the tin soap dish. The suds almost look like a family.

November 4, 2025 Ars Poetica: Lace Alex Carrigan After “Ars Poetica” by Ellene Glenn Moore And that’s when I found the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen tossed into the river outside my house: an entire milk crate full of lace scraps. I pulled it to shore with my boat hook and began to go through the pieces. Most of them had taken on the color of the river; muddy brown with a dark green line tracing along the scallop edges. I found one strand of lace that remained dry and white and held it up to the sky. A seagull snatched it from my hands before I could count the number of holes in it. It carried the lace with it as it flew towards the other side of the river. In that moment, I remembered what my grandmother said as she knitted lace for my first wedding veil: Make sure the pattern is readable.

what I love about HAD calls is they really swivel the microscope onto your aesthetics--do I send the pyromania poem, the puke poem, the Darth Vader grief poem, the plane crash love poem, the drunk man calls an Uber for an injured bird poem, the confessional poem about being hit by a van--what to do?

B.I.R.D. I remember my father as a small inventor. Of wireless bird cages, he said, the floor is gum. When the bird pushes down to launch, it sticks. Recently he said, thank God you got better looking, we were getting worried. I bought it I said. What were we so still for? In Dallas-Fort Worth, America’s diaphragm, I ate from a white plate at a bar seat. I looked outside and thought about horses that wait to run.
