Yuuuup. Hell, you’d get flack just for living in nearby liberal enclave Gambier, nevermind having actual leftist politics (which I did).

Dealing with “small town rural America” radicalized me.
This is the town where I grew up in Central Ohio. The total Hispanic population is 2%; the town voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024.

There's a reason I left, and also why I never trust anyone who says that folks who live in Chicago don't know what "real small town conservatives" are like.
A Taco Shop Raid Splits an Ohio Town in Red America
Panchos Tacos sponsored local sports teams and hosted the Rotary Club. Then federal immigration agents showed up.

Hi all! No new chapter of Human After All this week, as I have been under the weather. If you haven't read the first two chapters of my sci-fi romance serial yet, now's a great time to catch up for Chapter 3 next week!

This! Love a lanky cis guy. Give me your David Tennants and your Benedict Cumberbatches. Give me a skinny, nerdy guy who is absolutely flabbergasted to be seen as sexy.

I tend to write skinny, lanky guys myself, but I’d love to see more!
(and tbh when will you love skinny cis guys???)

This is probably a given, but I’d pick @joel.dirigibly.ltd to choose the books. He’s known me for nearly 20 years, and he reads some cool shit.
Who would you pick?? My sister has the same taste in books as I do, so I’d pick her for sure. #booksky

I am the embodiment of “write drunk, edit sober.”

Sober Diane? Constantly censoring my story ideas, especially more erotic ones.

High Diane? Thinking about writing a dark erotic romance collection inspired by the music of Rammstein.

But not the overtly sexual songs. Like, “Rosenrot” and “Sonne.”

Oh my god, if they come after the one OTC medication that works on my migraines I am so screwed.
JD Vance calls ibuprofen "useless medication" and implies it's not "necessary, safe and effective."

My brain is just endless screaming.

That’s normal at this point, right?

Apparently the Bsky team doesn’t listen to Johnny Cash.

Or understand jokes.
The account owner of @sarahkendzior.bsky.social was suspended for 72 hours for expressing a desire to shoot the author of an article. The post, made 11/10, stated: "I want to shoot the author of this article just to watch him die." 1/2

Afterglow is doing a pivot? Stephanie Boyd is still leading editorial but they’re asking for different manuscripts, after cancelling a bunch of contracted books not that long ago. Maybe wait to find out more info before sending your manuscripts into this maelstrom.
They definitely never closed their submissions page, I know that for sure! But their new release page had been frozen for months. Now it's all updated, and they're looking for different stuff. From Oct 29:

I wonder if this would explain the weird puritanical bent the younger generations have. Talking about, reading, watching sex is inherently vulnerable. Bonus: if you can’t tolerate this discomfort of being vulnerable around others, you’ll be more prone to being aversive and even hostile to it.
There's a whole generation that learned irony before sincerity and now they're trapped. Can't be earnest without a layer of self-deprecation. Can't be enthusiastic without signaling awareness of how cringe enthusiasm is.

The price of never being vulnerable is never connecting.

This is an excellent thread on why dopamine is important and why people with adhd struggle with tasks and habits etc. It's the dopamine and how our brains manage it.
For folks who don't know this intimately -

ADHD is tied to hyperactive dopamine reuptake. Our brains make plenty of dopamine, but they also recycle it faster than we can use it - like a busboy taking away your plate at a restaurant after you only had the first bite.

Dopamine regulates EVERYTHING.

This! I would rather do everything myself than use AI. Trades within the community are clutch. You can do things relatively inexpenively if you’re willing to put in time and effort.

If you‘re not… I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.
I will never use AI for my covers, editing, translation, or anything else. It is not only useless to me as an author, it is actively hostile and harms every skill related to book production.

If you're an author against AI used to generate writing, you better back everyone else in the chain too.

Every person responsible for this, from the goons in Broadview to the very top in DC, deserve life in prison.

No impunity for these crimes.
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

Check this setting—it changed without your consent! I used to get warnings when a user was labeled “rude” but that was turned off by default.

Change it!!
Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

Between this and the people complaining about SNAP beneficiaries buying treats, I’m convinced our greatest sin as a country (aside from the genocide) is refusing to move out of a puritanical Calvinist mindset.

Weber was right all along.
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”
