His Motorbike, Her Island (Nobuhiko Obayashi, 1986): Hadn’t seen a great transfer until last night. Like seeing it for the first time. Impossibly romantic, memory and reality crashing into one another via color or the absence of it. Probably the best movie ever made.

I find this movie deeply repugnant in a way I never find almost anything. The ways it tries to “find sympathy” for its main character while the writing, acting, and filmmaking is constantly treating him like a spectacle to be gawked and laughed at enrages me so badly.
