In other words, that's **99.8%** of current road infra is dedicated solely to motor vehicles.

Did you know❓ Cycle lanes count for just 0.2% of the current road infrastructure.

And a 5-star rating of maiming and killing anyone outside of it! Crash testing should factor in impact risk to anyone in its path.

"You pay every time you board a bus, and that makes you think about whether you want to ride it. If you paid every time you used a parking space, you'd also think about whether you want to drive. Free parking doesn’t mean free markets; it often means freeloading."

What flexposts say: "We could use steel bollards but a bollard might scratch a car and that would be a tragedy. So, we're going to use these instead — things literally designed to be run over — because protecting even one car from a scratch is worth thousands of pedestrian deaths every year."
Because city agencies are typically reactive, not proactive; crews aren’t scouring the city for downed flexposts. But in a rare victory for municipal services, explains @johnsurico.bsky.social, if you tell them, they will come.

“The kicker is that, contrary to the promises of state transportation depts, new & expanded highways consistently fail to reduce congestion. Instead of smoothing traffic flows, the added asphalt compels more people to drive until gridlock is as thick as before.” Via @davidzipper.bsky.social in Slate

Having a sheltered, lit, cameras, badge access only bike parking area with available showers is what did it for me! 🚲
One of the enablers that helped me start bike commuting in 2014 was that my employer offered secure bike parking in the underground garage. It cost hundreds of dollars to park a car down there, but I parked my bike for free. The bike parking only took up 1 car parking space & fit 10+ employee bikes.
Good piece, and again, cheers to the downtown YMCA for setting up indoor space for bikes behind the front desk. With all the excess space downtown, one positive use would be more indoor bike areas within offices, etc.

FWIW, the Walt Disney World Monorail moves approximately 7,000 passengers per hour. Even the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover moves about 4,880 passengers per hour. All better than Elon's tunnels.
Max capacity passengers per hour:
* Boring Co’s Vegas Loop: 4,500
* NYC subway 6 train: 105,000

Running some errands in Manhattan and it’s remarkable how light the traffic is even for this time of year. Only if you remember the before can you appreciate the after. Congestion pricing works.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?

this is actually insane data. every single politician like @govmurphy.bsky.social who opposes the congestion relief zone wants more people to get injured in car crashes

Yea! Plus, when it’s actually snowing, how many people are actually out driving? SUVs are mostly psychological comfort
People argue that SUVs are needed for winter weather. They’re completely unnecessary because driving slowly in ANY car can get them through the same conditions.

Better yet, bike if possible.
