Another day of reminding everyone of Carl Sagan’s eerily accurate warning about the dangers of not being able to ask skeptical scientific questions to those in power or authority.

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

Periodic reminder that the data from NASA missions, like the Mars rovers, is public domain for anyone to access for free.

All of the images taken by the Mars rovers are available online usually within 24 hours of being transmitted back to Earth.

Science is a public good.

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

Things that count towards officially and usefully measuring public opposition to a policy:

-Calling your elected representatives

-Signing petitions/open letters from reputable orgs

Things that do not count:

-Posting on social media about how you wish someone else would do something.

The “free speech / anti-cancel culture” party now literally firing people for thoughtcrime
"The purging underway suggests that the agency is not just seeking to eliminate DEI but also to remove people who have expressed interest or participated in programs related to it."

First it's your actions, then it's your intentions, and then it'll be your literal existence in this space. Ugh 😡
Trump’s DEI purge targets federal workers who did not work in DEI
Dozens of federal employees who didn’t work on diversity or inclusion issues have been placed on administrative leave following Trump's executive order.

Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan.

But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."

This was horrifying to read. Yes, it's boilerplate language that they made all the agency heads use, but this whole "turn in your coworkers trying hard to circumvent racism and ablism" vibe is pretty scary on day 2.5 or so.
