As a rule, I kind of hate Bsky’s constant complaining about NYT. Saying that, I opened up my first article for the day and I ran into the same “winning streak” phrase NYT has been using for the 3rd time, and I have to wonder what the fuck is causing them to run that “Trumpian Ubermensch” angle.

So I’m visiting an old friend. His son (pretty young, around 8) kind of sees me as a fun uncle, and has a number of Pokémon decks, so he wants to play Pokémon with me. I played the game a bit back in the day and I sort of remember the rules, so I say okay.

Alright, here's a complete mainline Final Fantasy tier list! While I still have a lot more to do, I've been playing XI for the past two months, and I've gotten to the point where I think I can rate it, which means I've officially played all the mainline games. Parameters and caveats below:

@patrickleder.bsky.social Just played the Ahoy expansion as the Coral Reef Pirates. They’re absolutely amazing, most fun I’ve ever had in this game. This expansion is so well made, especially in how it fleshes out the Smuggler roles. It’s a whole new game!

Lots of Dr Who fans coming out of the woodwork today to proudly proclaim they loved a story that depicts union organizers as terrorists and a corporation that literally kills someone to send the Doctor a message as more or less the good guy. Thanks DW fandom, never change.

I'm still in awe about the early Pokemon builds we've got, but there's one game I would kill to see an early development build for: Final Fantasy VI. We know Terra looked different, but there might be dropped characters, storyline changes, early abilities, etc. There's so much we could learn!!

I've got a small discovery I've made. Examining the Internal Index, I'm almost 100% positive that Zangoose was originally created as an evolution for Zigzagoon, before they changed their mind. Their palettes don't work with each other, but otherwise I can kind of see it:

Pokémon people: I’m almost positive this guy (named Bii in the earliest sprite list) has to be an early design for Volbeat. The Pokémon all around it in the Index had their names trademarked in January 2001, very early.
