the only way to ensure it's a bubble that'll eventually burst is to prevent institutional uptake of these technologies, which is still possible if we keep refusing and resisting

Sharing for the comments which are full of solutions. I only recently noticed them when trying to pull book and game covers for library socials.
What is up with web images being .webp now? Why? My (ancient, pre-subscription) copy of Photoshop can't open them. I can't even edit them in Preview unless I make a duplicate as another file type. I hate this. I object. I am a conscientious objector. Give me .jpg or give me death.

I read an interview today where Alison Bechdel talked about using chatGPT for a panel of her recent comic -- she prompted it and copied the results -- and I still don't know what to do with that. It genuinely feels in moments like this like so many of our art elders are failing us.
Catching up with what James Gurney, the Dinotopia artist, is up to these days. Pathetic.

I live in a big city and I still willingly commute to another city to see movies. Every single time.

I have read two absolutely unenjoyable books this year and that is too many nearly back to back. But I’m now reading Of Monsters and Mainframes and having a great time about it so here’s to hoping I have many fun reads in a row before another bad one.

I am magnanimous in my house kingdom. I agreed to turn up the heat to 65F for the night because our blankets are not all dry from being washed.

I don’t like it at this temp partly because the radiators hiss and spit and clank overnight at this temp and that’s hard to sleep through.

When and why did all fantasy start using the phrase “what in the hells”? It seems like it’s been in every fantasy book I’ve read, regardless as to publication date or sub genre. I’ve read so many back to back that now I’m getting annoyed.

I’m listening to the third of fifteen books I have to read for the Garden State Teen Book Awards and this is the first time I am irritated at the YA label because this feels very middle grade despite the potential age of the main character.

Can someone explain to me why so many shirt form food videos have people using plastic gloves at home? I’m genuinely confused by this if it isn’t like, handling greens that could sting prior to cooking or a sensation thing. I’m just shocked by how common it seems.

RE Larian and GenAI: now that we know the physical impact of LLMs and the data centers they require to run, even if trained off in-house data, there is still NO ethical way to use GenAI

In the early days of popular EVs and hybrids, I worked with someone who called in from the parking lot because her car wouldn’t turn off. So like… I don’t trust this newer tech that takes away a lot of the mechanical things for the sake of aesthetics. Like… what did a key ever do to harm you?
The SAFE Exit Act endorsed by Consumer Reports aims to address growing safety concerns with electronic car door handles that may not function properly if a vehicle loses power or is involved in a crash.
Proposed Law Takes Aim at Unsafe Electronic Car Door Handles - Consumer Reports
The SAFE Exit Act follows an investigation into Tesla's electronic door handles; the law requires a manual fail-safe and a way for first responders to get in.

I just finished my 4th book of the year! I’m currently listening to two audiobooks, one of which I might have to swap out for text because boy howdy the author reads at hyperspeed and you can hear her literally gulp for air. Like yo lil homie have some water and don’t need an ambulance. 👀

@rainbowofcrazy.bsky.social do you use a template or any kind of structure when writing out book reviews? I have a few I have to write for arcs and whatnot and I am generally very terrible at being consistent with review writing.

It’s official: RFK Jr has officially reduced recommended childhood vaccines from 17 to 11, removing universal vaccine recommendations for RSV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, dengue and two types of bacterial meningitis.

This reckless contravention of science is going to kill people.

I recently learned this trick for getting images out of a Google Doc, so I wanted to share in case it's useful.

File -> Download -> Web Page. Then unzip, and you've got a nice folder of images!

genuinely something I love about the internet are all the spaces where people post pictures of snakes/birds/flowers/mushrooms they see and people help them identify it for no reason other than appreciation for the natural world.

goodnight, and remember: library late fees suck. they simply discourage library use. you should be glad if your library abolished them, and if it hasn’t, you should tell them it should. 📚
